I have thought about getting a German Shepard, Just have 3 kiddos & a son on the way & worry how they are around children. Also how bad do they shed?

    Seb's high class.
    He'll mow your grass.
    He'll kick your ass.
And while his kidney stones pass,
    He'll piss in a glass!

My shepherd is great with kids, but the shedding is awful. Have to pick up tumbleweeds of dog hair all the time.

I have 2, my male does not shed at all, except for about 2 weeks at the end of winter. My female sheds year round. There is a good brush you can get called the furminator and if you spend a few minutes every day you wont have a problem. As for how they are with kids. My male will let our 6 year old climb on him, wrestle with him, really do whatever. If he gets annoyed he will get up and walk away. He is the best family dog in the world. BUT if someone comes around that he does not know he will rip their face off. To me he is the perfect dog and he knows his job is to protect his home and his family.

SEB in your situation I would look for a puppy though, if the dog can grow up with your kids he will think of them as his pack. If you go the rescue route and get one that is older, it may be set in its ways and not really into the whole kids situation. With my dogs I honestly can leave the house and never worry about the safety of my family though. I know those dogs would die for their family. My female is the sweetest dog in the world, never shown any aggression to anyone. But one day a pit came after me, she stepped in front of the pit and ripped its throat out in less than a second. This was over 2 years ago and she has never showed teeth to anyone or anything since. She saw a threat coming after me and she took it out.

I grew up around shepherds and collies. Both great breeds. The only problem with a shepherd is I pity the SOB who messes with "his/her" kid!

              OP - I run these

              [ame]http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_6?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=foscam%20fi8910w[/ame]

and am going to add some of their outdoor versions. Just needs power and a wireless network. I use Blueiris to do my recordings, alerts and so forth.

As mentioned earlier, most of these cameras are NOT going to be identifying a gnats wing span from 30 yards. However, my theory/thinking is this...

              1. Even if you have HD video of someone stealing your shit - and no one knows who it is, it's just video. I have mine to make sure I keep people I know honest and as a heads up somone is around, in my shop...etc...etc

              2. Cars: There would be a good use for plate information. However, depending on your home setup - if it is like mine they'd literally have to pull in my driveway. Otherwise, we'll just see the side of the car which gives make/model/color and general condition.

              3. I do believe in getting what you pay for all the time. The Foscam (indoor) cameras are not going to resist any physical abuse, water or using the patrol function constantly. However, for the money you get pan/tilt, basic video and super easy setup.

This is just another TYPE of option as opposed to traditional setups.

I have a steel strike plate that is 3 feet long on both doors, and is held into the door frame with a I think 4 inch bolts or something like that. The door would be tuff as hell to kick in with that on it.

I also got a 4 camera security system installed (broke my fucken writs doing it, but got it done!), there are many setups out there, AllTex, Frye's etc.

Sucks man, sorry to hear that happened to ya.

EDIT: John -- '02 HAWK, mine is very similar to that, but I got it somewhere else, can't recall the company name now.

X2 i always use very long wood screws with threads all the way up to the head for both the door and the frame.

Germann Shepards are excellent dogs. With kids too. Get it when it's a puppy and it'll grow to live the kids just as much as you. They are great dogs in every way. But add mentioned they shed like crazy.

Ok, this leads me to my next question about them. How are they in this Texas sun given they are a outside dog & do you suggest two Females or two males or one of each. I want to get two for my place out in Royse City here in the next couple years once I get The Shop built out there on the property & they will stay in their fenced in area. We have a HUGE problem with Coyotes, They got a hold of a Rott/Mix dog that was a stray & he was no little dog & the only thing left of that dog was his head & two front legs. Hence why Im concerned with them staying in the fenced in area. The Coyotes cross the road & hit the high grass on the back end of my property & back end of my neighbors property where we both dont mow & the lure dogs back there & then pack up on them.

But really want two good guard dogs for the shop once its built to scare off would be theives. But I worry about the Coyotes. Buttkiss tangled with two of them & there was three Coyotes running down the fence line to help their pals out with Buttkiss & had I not been there with a 22 Im sure he wouldnt be here today & had I not been armed. I might have been right there with him

SEB, Honestly mine don't stay out for more than 30 minutes in the extreme weather, hot or cold. Like I said earlier I have both a male and a female and they are night and day. They both have their quirks. But both are great with the kid and amazing family dogs.

Isn't it legal to shoot and kill coyotes in Texas? If so, kill one or two and hang the hides along the fence. It may be an urban legends, but I heard it scares the other ones away. Course, they may just come eat the skins too, so you'll just be inviting more around... who knows.
