We'll need clarification on good choo$ versus GOOD choo$ (with 8mpg and ruffdaddy benchmarks, of course).

FWIW i took a job where im at making 14/hr entry level just to get a foot in the door feb 2012. I have been promoted twice and am making over twice what i was hired on at as just my base with another promotion and 30% pay increase within the next 8 months. What im getting at is that it may not be ideal, but hard work will get you where you need to be.

The company pays for the health insurance which starts on day 1 (this is important because of my back) and the company matches up to 6% of 401k. Travel also will not be quite as much as originally estimated

If it's 100% company paid for all benefits, including monthly premiums, copays, RX, no deductibles, etc - jump on it. That alone is worth ~$5k/yr +

As noted above, expect to settle between your counter and their offer, which is exactly what happened.

Now it's your call. If you counter their counter, you run a high risk of them saying, "Fuck it, he's too difficult to work with"...

Either a better opportunity will come along or my cake/confection business will start to take off!

Does anyone have a good example of a general cover letter they can send me? Something for sending/handing resume's to hiring managers and recruiters.

Oh, and I am VERY grateful for those of you who have gone out of their way to help me with my resume, offer job leads, and support in general.

Well, It has been a month and a half since my final interview with the VP. I know that they went on and interviewed at least 100 more candidates. I almost get the feeling that they made the same offer to a few other people and they turned it down as well. It may be pompous of me, but I wont take less than the $38K I countered with. For the time away from home wear and tear on my truck, that is what it would take. With 170K on the clock, my truck would have to be replaced within 12-18 months anyway. The other factor that would play in is that my side business is picking up a bit, leads are becoming more plentiful, and that is $3-4K a year in income that wouldn't be there because I wouldn't have time to do it anymore.

I that is how they are approaching it I would be glad you didn't get the gig. Sounds like they might run through a lot of employees.
