    • A little bump here. any recommendations on who to talk to or where to post my resume. All I get from CB/Monster are BS offers from insurance agencies. Do I need to pay for a service to get solid leads? Any recruiters that I could talk to? I thought I had some solid leads/inside tracks here the last month, but nothing has panned out. Is my experience/education really THAT pathetic?

You need to get a LinkedIn account and update it as complete as possible. Network with the companies and recruiters for what you are looking to do.

Don't pay for anything, but you need to network.

I finally got an e-mail sent your way. I've had a linkedin profile for several years. I've been adding contacts weekly if not daily at times.

          • This thread is great, haha. How many of you consider the value/cost of benefits when determining your total remuneration as well?

            • The latest round of "we found better candidates but will keep your info on file just in case" emails have started trickling in. I found a couple of inside sources at a few companies who took my resume to internal recruiters. Each one basically said it would be a no brainer if you had experience. How do you get experience for entry level positions if no one is willing to give you a chance!

A few here on the board have stepped forward to look at and audit my resume, for that I am grateful. I check job boards and company sires 2-3 times a week and apply for jobs I feel I am semi qualified for.

              • A small development this morning. I got a call from the first guy I interviewed with this morning. Keep in mind, this is about a month and a half after my final interview. They made me a formal offer today. $32K base, bonus potential, $250/qtr gas allowance. I don't know anything about the health benefits other than the fact that they go into effect on day 1.

I am very torn at this point. On one hand, it is a bit more money, I get out of retail into a "real job". On the other hand, once it is broken down, the base salary is only a couple hundred dollars more than my current pay checks after taxes and deductions. My fuel bill is going to triple or quadruple, I will eat up the fuel allowance in the first quarter of a month, let alone quarter of the year. I live in Greenville, and the "home office" for this position is in Forney. Round trip just to the office will be 80 miles, I will be traveling to established sub divisions (not sure where at this point) through out the day using my personal vehicle. I would venture to say that is going to add ~50 miles/day to my commute, so 130 miles every day. I estimate about $600/mo in gas alone, filling up twice a week. Of course, once I was in a position to do so, I would pick up a more fuel efficient commuter, my truck only gets 21 mpg.....

                • $250/qtr gas alowance and you have to use your personal vehicle daily?? id be out on that....

BUT, you may want to look into the fact that all your fuel/maintenance/vehicle depriciation may be a writeoff and save you a bit on taxes.

                  • The question now is, do I counter, or do I pass. If I counter, what number do I throw out.

I was talking to my buddy who works there, and he put it this way "it sounds like they offered you fresh out of college money". I am torn with this statement. I know I am worth more than 32K/yr. But on the other hand, I am no more experienced than someone who is fresh out of college, so why should I expect a company to pay more for my employment.

If my estimates are correct on the mileage, I am looking at $7K in fuel expenses over a 12 month period, subtract their $250/qtr allowance and its $6K.

I would probably counter offer, but since i dont drive for a living i dont know what is an appropriate counter. Sounds like youre ok with the base/bonus if you werent paying 600/mo in gas.

I don't really know that I am ok with that as a base. Granted, I make less than 10/hr now. I believe I am worth more than 32/yr.

Here is the flip side of the coin, this is the first real offer I have had since graduation. This position is in no way related to my degree so it doesn't help me in this instance.

I have another round of applications in for technical positions, from entry level ME to basic drafting.

                        • Personally, I would take it and start getting real world experience related to your degree. Consider it a stepping stone.

Even though you believe you are worth more than the 32K they are offering, doesn't mean they do. As you said, you have no experience in that field, so you are getting, fresh off the street offers.

You have to look at in terms of, how can/will this job help you in the future. Are there experiences to be had/learned that you can apply to something in the future? Does it give you more responsibility than current job/past jobs?
What is the potential to "move up" with this company or others like it?

With no experience, you are not going to get top-tier offers for salary.

                            I would counter with:
Base - $38K. They will usually come up and meet you in the middle probably somewhere around the $34-35K range
                            Gas/qtr - $500. I don't know that I would yield much on this one. $250/qtr isn't shit. $500 isn't great, but that's at least 6-8 tanks of fuel...
"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." - Thomas Jefferson, 1776

This, but you need to counter with a higher number, expecting to settle at a "happy medium". I've never heard of anyone rescinding an offer due to a counter.

Give them something like "Thank you for the offer, and after review, I would like to respectfully counter your offer of employment at base salary of $37,500 per year with a $500/qtr gas allowance. Based upon the requirements of the position, I am very happy to accept an offer of my counter, as the cost of fuel, vehicle maintenance, etc, blah blah blah".

Don't make it about your commute from Greenville, they won't care.

                              • Unfortunately, this job is in no way related to my degree. My contact for the position has hopes of me moving to construction manager within 12-18 months, which would be a pay increase. However, at this point, I would consider it a step backwards in responsibility. I am currently in a management role, the position I would be taking, is only a management role by name (warranty manager).
