MOSCOW (AP) — Russian scientists have recovered a giant chunk of the Chelyabinsk meteor from the bottom of the lake it crashed into.

A meteor that blazed across southern Urals in February was the largest recorded meteor strike in more than a century. More than 1,600 people were injured by the shock wave from the explosion, estimated to be as strong as 20 Hiroshima atomic bombs, as it landed near the city of Chelyabinsk.

Scientists on Wednesday recovered what could be the largest part of this meteor from Chebarkul Lake outside the city. They weighed it using a giant steelyard balance, which displayed 570 kilograms (1,256 pounds) before it broke.

Sergei Zamozdra, an associate professor at Chelyabinsk State University, told Russian television the excavated fragment was definitely a chunk of the meteor.

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

heh, meaning we have some technology. That's fine, but not the greatest for all that is out there. On top of that, man power is limited and mainly because there is no glory or serious money in this type of work.

Edit: Damn it, not proof reading owned me. Watch***

Just visited the meteor crater East of Flagstaff, AZ last week. They had a few hand-sized examples setup to show much more the meteor rocks weigh compared to a similar sized Earth rock. Depending on the composition of the meteor, some of them were 4-5 times heavier than the Earth rocks.

That's a really awesome sight. Probably one of my favorite places I've been to since starting all these road trips. IMO the pics don't even do it justice as to the size of it.

Sounds like the Russians need better scales.

It's either going to be this, a caldera, a pandemic, or Democrats that destroy us one day.

After going to the AZ crater, the one on the West side of Odessa is so small it almost seems fake.
