Exif data is hidden info stored by the camera\phone in the pic that contains various details on how the pic was taken, with what device, and if the device is GPS-enabled with geotagging on, also exactly where it was taken. You can delete exif data or disable geotagging altogether to prevent the disclosure of the location where you took your pics.

However, I could tell you a couple of different ways to get around that. Just a few steps to take before you post it or send it from the phone itself. And I'm sure there will be or already are some warez apps out there that can stop the camera from embedding GEO location info into the images from smart phones. There are a lot of things these smart phones can do that people don't realize. Anytime there is an operating system present, there is a backdoor.

...Ooorr you can decline it when it says it wants to connect to the internet for data use. NONE of my pics are GPS tagged.

I'm not 100% on the iPhone but Android doesn't get GPS info from the Internet. GPS is its own separate permission. I'm thinking that since iPhone uses the Google Maps API as well that it's the same way.

          Or just disable GPS.

This stuff has been out for a few years now. It is very easy to disable on a camera or phone.

When I updated my iPhone a while back, I noticed a new tab in my photo albums; Places. You click it and boom an exploded map with pins in it. Click the pins and see a list of photos. Zoom in and the pins spread out, covering every location I took a picture. Crazy shit. I don't remember it asking me, and I could not access or use this information before this update, but every picture I've taken for the past 1.5 years is on that map. I could follow my steps in my trip to California. I was shocked. Ah well, I'm glad I didn't take a picture of my friend's "garden" while I was there.
