Looks to me as if his wife handled the situation correctly. He knew she wasn't some random chick driving with her head up her ass and when confronted he knew he had to stand down or was going to get dealt with, thats why he did the right thing and went about his business.

One way to handle this is not to stop unless you can get positive ID it is a cop. Call 911, give them the license plate number and they should be able to tell you if it is a cop. And yes, report that shit. No off duty cop should be following anyone when they know damn good and well they could be setting themselves up for a confrontation.

I'd file a complaint just to cover the bases. If he's innocent and was on 911 as well, then no harm, no foul just a misunderstanding. If he's lying, then there's a papertrail and if he decides to start randomly giving you tickets for things you have something to look back on

This is not the 60's anymore and we are not anywhere near the LAPD so I pretty damn sure an APB hasn't been put out on anyone's car. Not to mention no one wants to loose their job over another guy being a dumb ass. I would be willing to bet he shut his trap and went on about his day.

Oh and Coop I have been to many "accidents" where someone thought they got tapped and really didn't. Maybe that's why he darted up and changed lanes. Who knows? You guys know I am not captain save a cop by any stretch. I just do not see this one as a big deal.

I would think being a "responsible" LEO if he thought he was hit, wouldn't he have just got the plate #, cooled off, check his car, then go from there? Of course even if he felt her tap him and she didn't realize it and went on with her business, as a "responsible" LEO and probably being in and seeing many scenerio's, would have at the least introduce himself and say "Mam, I think you may have hit me", I'm pretty sure she checked her mirror and saw his demeanor, which is why she was a wee bit scared.

Sounds like he mad cause he was following too close to the car in front of him and almost paid for it by rear-ending them. So felt he did the next "responsible" thing. All speculation of course.
All the training and real life experiences, he learned how to respond to a "possible" tap n drive by a lady this way.
I would let it slide.

You're right, it's not the 60's but it still happens. You're saying police don't use their power to get back at people for slights? I'm pretty sure given 30 seconds I can pull quite a few articles backing me up. Do I really need to restart the articles showing police violence and attacks on citizens?

He chased her through traffic and up to a restaurant. From what I read he only backed down when she informed him she was armed, not when he saw no damage. Cowards like easy prey. When you have someone saying "Back off, I'm armed and feeling threatened" they're no longer easy but that doesn't mean homeboy has forgotten some woman had the audacity to stand her ground. If I'm wrong about him, no biggie nothing happens, this goes in his record and there's nothing else in there to worry about.

If I'm right, this provides another instance of him going off his rocker and will help make a future case against him. Either way, there's no harm in submitting a complaint over his actions and only downsides if you don't.

A threatening manner? Wow now that you say it that way it sounds so harsh, and closer to police misconduct. Maybe the gentle man is getting tired of people not paying attention and causing accidents. From the original story it does not sound like anyone went off their rocker or anyone was in hot pursuit. Maybe he was trying to get a marked unit up on the highway (good luck) to stop her and then she darted off. I am quite sure you can dredge up one of your many stories you have copy and pasted to your FTP file but it's ok I am good thanks.

In the last five years I've had three plain clothes/off duty fuck bags all in different situations (while driving) pull their badge to try and one up a situation. All three instances it was something they did to which I pointed out either by returning the gesture or at a stop light and telling them. In every instance they were told just because they had a badge didn't excuse them for driving like a fuck bag. So yes, of course they use their power in a bullshit way.

You'd think that being a cop he'd have some inkling of what they were going to do when they showed up. Seems like they'd say something like "There was no wreck? Well, er... move along. Move along."
