I'm willing to bet that there will be all kinds of people watching & checks in place to keep the kids "safe" from the gays if they are allowed. Probably more than they watch for actual child molesters & a damn site more than churches do to watch pedos. They know that people will be itching for something to happen so they can do a gotcha.

@ 5 yrs old - that was cub scouts and you always had to have a parent with you for overnight trips.

It wasn't until junior-high to high school that we even did multi nights.

So ask yourself, how comfortable are you sending your 5yr old boy into the woods with a gay man for a week?
Once again, I personally would have no problems with it. You know there are gay teachers in schools right?

honestly, i wouldnt feel comfortable having my kids go into the woods with ANY man without me being present. Id probably feel better if it was a gay guy since they usually go for other adult gay guys.

I was a Boy Scout. It was a lot more hardcore then than it is now about the gays. Having said that, it was only an issue with guys being gay. We had a lesbian leader, but she proved her worth by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. She went with us to Philmont.
She was woman enough to care for us, but tough enough to laugh when we were being whiny kids.

When I was older, a gay couple I'm friends with adopted a nephew who was being subjected to a shitty, slave life by his hetero parents in California. It was gruesome for him growing up in that environment. He is permanently scarred and continues to show signs of being a general fuck up.
I became a Scout Master/confidant to this gay couple in order to help this boy grow into a man. They were aware of the stance and did everything they could to steer clear of upsetting the balance. The fact that his Uncles could not attend very many meetings, awards ceremonies, or any camping trips further damaged him.
This kid was shown real family love, but having to hide it in a setting where he could learn the basics of being a good man did not help his already terrible situation.

I'm glad they are starting to accept gays in the Boy Scouts. I'm worried about how they'll handle it, though. Religion is a big element to Boy Scouts, that's another big hurdle. One of the gentlemen in this gay couple happened to be ordained with at least 2 degrees in Theology. Not sure where I'm going with that tidbit of info, but seriously. Excluding gays is retarded.

Oh, and most pedo's are heterosexual.

Lol at some of these replies, I would have more of an issue with my kids going to church alone.

If you don't accept gays as equals, then be clear about that. Your opinion is valid either way. Either teach him to be unnaccepting of gays, or teach him to be accepting of them, but don't muddy the water unnecessarily. Also, odds are the den mother won't be gay, and neither will the scout leader, so there's really not a point in making a decision until you come to it. If all his buddies are joining, and he wants to join, and you're cool with troop leadership, what's the problem?

i stated that is not the role model i want him looking up to. Can we agree life is easier and you prolly have to deal with less shit being a straight man? thats all i want for Jr, just the easiest, best path i can provide for him until he is old enough to make his own decisions. I do everything i am humanly capable of to be the best man i can for my son. i am looking in the best interest of my son. i dont know anything about being gay, i do know about being a grown man that is respectful and responsible for his actions. that said maybe thats the reason i coach Jr's baseball, soccer, and basketball.

I don't have kids so I'm not going to sit here and pretend to have some sort of logical answer. However, I do remember someone having a pretty big meltdown in Canada over this subject a few years back, iirc. Now I'm going to have to go look for it, damn it.

No shit. If you don't like gays, that's your prerogative, but don't try to paint them in a light that isn't true.

1 Corinthians 6:9 makes it pretty clear where God stands on the issue of homosexuality.

As long as Christians are funding Boy Scouts, this will always be an issue.

Just a passing thought, but perhaps it would be easier for gays if straight men and women didn't make life so hard for them.
