I think either one of those cars is good. But I think a reg cab pick up with a v6 is what I'd go with. The less passengers the better.

I agree with your point about the passengers. But trucks just suck at gas mileage.

I sent both my girls to college with 7/8-year-old cars they drove in high school, and they did just fine. I made sure they had good tires on them (they were driving home several hours each way) and kept them well maintained. The beatings cars take in high school and college/apartment parking lots is incredible.

Gas Mileage is the big thing. Trucks are good on insurance, but horrible gas mileage. Not to mention trucks in Texas are expensive as shit. Plus I don't want to have to be working on it all the time.

They are. I talk to people from out of state and they can't believe how cheap trucks are here. If you want a truck that gets good MPG, get an S10 extended cab with a 4cyl and 5 speed. I was getting 25 MPG with mine.

Alfa Romeo 164. They're cheap, sound fantastic but aren't that quick, and it won't run half the time so he'll have half the mileage to ball it up in.

Yet again, an Alfa is the answer.

I don't really don't know enough about either of those cars to add a valuable opinion between them.

Friend of mine just went through this dilemma...they decided on a regular cab Ranger to keep their boy from hauling a bunch of people around all the time. The downside is that a lot of those smaller trucks end up on their lid easier than a lot of other vehicles, but they still overall are rated pretty safe. He really likes it too b/c it's opened up some options for him to make some extra money doing yard work, moving/hauling stuff, etc.

My daughter wants a synergy green body/silver roof (new Camaro color) '53 Chevy 2 door sedan. The hot rod/custom loving car guy in me says "hellmotherfuckingyes". The responsible dad in me says to get a '53 Chevy to build and have her help me work on it, but teach her how to drive a standard and start her out driving my current beater daily driver '99 Honda Civic !

By the time she gets to driving age, we could have a very nice little LS powered '53 Chevy built for her to cruise in and she will appreciate it and respect it since she will be building it with me and putting in her time and effort to make it nice.

Well, I would like to hope it goes that way.

^^^What Matt said. But back to the topic at hand, being that Ive had the opportunity to putt around in a loaner 2.5 altima while my truck got its regular service a few weeks ago, I think they are rather gutless, and boring to drive. I guess they will make an ok first car.

When I was 14, I was itching to get an old car project and learn to work on them. My dad had an 84 olds cutlass that wouldnt start, and was overall just a huge pile of shit. He said if I could get it running, It would be my first car. I got it running within a weekend (needed fresh gas, and carb needed a go-through, plus a jump start). So I turned around and sold it a week later for $1000. I took that plus my savings up to check out an old yellow Torino up in Oklahoma. When my dad saw it, he fell in love just as much as I did. He said he would match my savings, and for $2500, I walked away with a 1970 Ford Torino GT that wouldnt run without throwing every warning light on the dash. My dad then made me the offer, if I wanted to turn the wrenches, he would buy the parts. For his total investment of $6k, I got a cool as hell car to drive every day, some really good times with my high school middle school friends (spent in the garage rebuilding an old cleveland), and a great education on basic car mechanics. Im not saying he never turned a wrench, but it was possibly the best bonding experience me and my father had. I still have the car. I wont get rid of it. It was/still is my baby.

Don't forget about that part, Barry. You can't replace or get that experience back. Just a thought man....
