Dude, go to any of the smaller towns. Lafayette is cool. Lots of excellent chow. All the smaller towns have Mardi Gras, but without the ass-whip of New Orleans.

Don't judge th rest of the state by New Orleans. The locals can't stand N.O. - kinda like Texans don't claim Houston.
