There were several at the Hastings here in Greenville.

As for not knowing the deceased. My girlfriend mentioned it the other day. I never met him, merely read the book, but seem pretty affected by it. I am not completely sure myself. Maybe its the tragic nature and the seemingly senseless act. Maybe it is is due in part tome never enlisting and wishing I had.

      • As a US Marine from 01/1987 to 05/1991, it sickens me that a fellow Marine murdered Chris.

It's understandable, he was obviously a well liked man; someone that should be looked up to for his actions and values. You read a book that he wrote with pieces of himself intertwined and it gives you the sense that you know him. Don't feel weird, what you feel is what any true American should feel.

Just picked up the book at Wally World. I agree with you. Senseless and tragic. My girlfriend lives in Midlothian and I have seen his truck more than once on 67, but did not even put 2 & 2 together. I did not know he lived there till he died.

            • I'm guessing that was his SEAL team standing behind his wife while she spoke?

                Probably so.

There were 2 guys that I would never fuck with that spoke.

The first guy was the old Seal in the suit w/ Trident at the very first of the memorial, and the second is the Seal LT (looking at his sleeves) that spoke with the very short hair and big ears.

                    • It was hard to watch at times but some GREAT things were said about Chris that provide just the very most minor details about his life to those of us who didn't know him.

                        • This was posted to one of the tribute pages on FB tonight:

A good read about good men ... Chad Littlefield and Chris Kyle.

This was on the Midlothain Bible Church site and I thought it was so very well written...

                          Midlothian Bible Church

Today, a good man will be laid to rest. Tuesday, another. Chad Littlefield and Chris Kyle were good men. They were the type of men you want your sons to become and your daughters to marry. Family men, loyal, rugged, caring. Many people let fear consume them and do nothing. These guys nodded at fear then took another step forward. To them, inactivity was unacceptable. No one coerced them to do what they did, a committee wasn't formed, no permission sought. They simply saw a need and decided to make a difference like they had done many times before. You see, for guys like this, the risk of helping others trumps personal preference. This "others-above-self" purpose is often misunderstood by those who haven't experienced the satisfaction of meeting a need unrelated to their own. They breathed rare air and in death challenge us to be better, to do more, to touch a life, to make a difference, to be, like them, good men.

Chad and Chris had different life experiences, one chose to work 9-5, one choose the military. One was a little reserved, one was a little more outspoken. Yet they became friends. Why? I'm sure there are many answers to this question that we may never know, but one unmistakable, lasting reason is because they shared the same passion to serve others. Their acts of kindness didn't come with a press conference or a lot of fanfare. In fact, had the tragedy not happened, no one, except their families, would have known about the sacrifice of taking time out of yet another Saturday to help a troubled soul. They preferred it that way. In many respects, they were just like you and me. They had books partially read, "to-do" lists unchecked, and dreams waiting to be fulfilled. They weren't perfect men (no one is by the way), but they didn't let that stop them. They chose to invest their lives in the opportunities God gave them. In fact, their actions often interrupted family time and personal leisure, but trying to stop them would have been as futile as asking a cowboy to forget about his horse. These were good men.

But what made them good? Was it their acts of kindness? Was it who they knew? Was it what they had accomplished in life? Was it the qualities mentioned above? As tempting as it is, goodness can't be left to humans to define because the standard would constantly change depending on the values of the person doing the judging. The Bible clearly says that no one can be considered "good" on their own merit. So, how is it that I can confidently describe Chad and Chris as "good men"? Their lives were admirable, their actions unparalleled, but their goodness couldn't be earned. It had to be given. "We are made right with God (declared to be good) by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are." (Romans 3:22, NLT). At a strategic point in their lives, both of these men, these manly men, humbled themselves and trusted in "goodness" as God defined it. They believed that Jesus' work for them was enough to make them "good" men and from that foundation served others.

The castles we build as humans will eventually crumble and the things we normally value will fade into nothing, but the legacy that will be told about these two men will live for generations not only because of the tragedy of their deaths or the honor of their lives, but because of the goodness granted to them by a gracious and merciful God. We lost two good men last Saturday. The world needs more like them. Will you courageously step forward to stand in the gap left in their absence? Don't settle for mediocrity or the prison of the mundane. Be bold for God in life so that others will want to be like you in death.

                            • I am gonna have to wait for it to hit youtube or something.

How was his turnout? I know they expected thousands but hope the place was packed to the roof.

I actually haven't read the book but I did buy it on Amazon a few days ago and it shipped already.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

I'm note sure if they every panned the crowd during the broadcast. There were definitely a number of empty seats. It would have been wonderful for the place to be packed. If there was a way for me to burn it from my DVR I would send you a copy.
