I've kicked around the idea of not owning car a few times, but still having a motorcycle as an only vehicle. If you only use a car once in a blue moon it makes more sense to either borrow a friends car/truck or rent one for a day or however long you need one.

I use my car more for going to car events than actually driving anywhere. The only issue I run into is getting my service and dress uniforms back and forth to work which I could probably find a work around for, but they are totally random when they want you somewhere in a uniform and which one.

I really love my car but could easily get by without it.

That article is just giving a preview of exactly what is happening in Japan right now. The public transportation system over there is practical and very well run. You can live ANYWHERE in the country and get to pretty much anywhere else. As a result, car sales are plummeting. The decline is accelerating as the older generations die off because younger generations no longer see a car as a status symbol.

Many of you are right that this won't be such a big deal in Texas or any other state where you pretty much NEED a car but overall, it is a huge deal for the auto industry.

I'm blown away at the amount of young people that don't care to get a license. I've met several people in their early 20's that don't have a license and don't care to get one. I was standing in line on my 16th birthday before the DMV opened to get my license.

Many of the 8th graders I teach say they don't care if they get one or not. That doesn't mean they don't intend to drive though because they talk about already driving around town.

I sure as hell wouldn't live somewhere, where I didn't need some kind of motorized transport. Mechanical things, motorcycles and cars especially are something I love to have and tinker with.

I've dated a few girls that have no license they were in their early/mid 20s. It's one of the big reasons I stopped dating those girls because they always needed a ride to get somewhere. Anytime I wanted to hang our or they wanted to hang out guess who got stuck driving or (usually) riding through shitty I-35 traffic everytime. Fuck that.

They always swore they were gonna get one but with one it was a year later and she still didn't have one. I asked how they got around since there isn't much of a public transport system. They said they always bummed rides from friends and shit. Again fuck that I'm not depending on someone else to get my ass around.

That's because the new generation is lazy as fuck and has no aspiration other than to post on facebook and play video games.

These are true. My wife has two brothers in their early 20's. One just now started driving in the past year, and the other couldn't care less about driving.

And they are both bums, IMO.

Even if I lived in New York I would still own a car but if I was in New York I would be dead cause thats the only way you will ever get me there.
