I Used AVG free for years until I had a corrupted file download from them During an update. Brian, Texas redneck was able to extract all my data and save my computer for me. And that was after worst buy freak squad told me my hard drive was crashed. (yes that's a shameless plug for Brian.)

I'll take his word for it and use of Avast if that's what he is recommending.

no prob spending $100 or so on a good virus protection software.

What would you guys choose between Avira or Norton?

For paid, Norton gets my vote. Look at the review link I posted in my previous reply. I also linked to the certification for Avira and the Norton one can be viewed on that same site.

I keep the free version of Avast on our comps. Plenty happy with it. 2 other programs I use all the time are SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes. Between these threee programs everything stays nice and clean.

AVG has worked great for me for 10 years. If you want double protection, Microsoft Security Essentials works good too.

You can easily download both of them from here.

The easiest, fastest way to update or install software. Ninite downloads and installs programs automatically in the background.
