    Got a new computer and the free trial version of Norton is expiring.

    Just wandering what the best software to buy would be?

    If you're not willing to pay for a subscription then pick up Avast.

      You could wander over to microsoft and get security essentials. I haven't had any problems with it.

            I use webroot on my PC and laptop, its about $50 a year for up to 3 machines and I've never had a problem with it

                Ditch norton that piece of crap. FWIW, Avira has the highest detection rate in the industry. They do have a free version but it will bug you about buying the paid one from time to time. MSE is also very good imo

                    Your info is wrong. Norton is a fantastic product, but that hasn't always been the case. They did a total rewrite in late '08 and it's been tops since the '09 product iteration. Avira *used to have the best detection rate, but that's not the case anymore. MSE has failed to make independent lab certification for 2 testing periods now and is no longer recommended for use. Avast is where it's at for free, especially with its added features that no other freebie has.
