Yes I did, I worked for over a year at a Golden Corral while attending junior college. I just do not adhere to the general attitude that waitstaff are automatically entitled to tip just because they took a job as waitstaff, even if they give shitty service. I give a usual tip if service is satisfactory, usually 20%. If it is great, I give more, if it is worse I give less. If it is horrible, I give little or none, and will even tell them WHY. I'm not cheap, I tip 95% of the time since service is usually good from most all waitstaff, my issue is with being FORCED to give a tip no matter the service, good or bad.

A waiter or waitress can make some serious money if they work hard and be courteous, I know I did which is fucking hard if you are a man. If they give great service, most people will reward it, I know I do. Many times they will end up getting repeat customers, which means more money. A shitty waitress/waiter will not get much, and people will remember the service more than anything and not come back.

I agree with what you're saying. However, I think most places tend to add the auto gratuity in order to compensate for the big tables that tend to tip less. Most people in a huge group do not tip what the waitress/waiter deserves. Big tables are a chore and take away from other tips that could be made.

Say you're waiting a table of 12-15 folks, and the total bill of all tickets is between $300-400. They've been sitting there close to two hours conversating, yadda yadda yadda. You've been busting your ass on this table for two hours making a great impression and going above and beyond. Keeping 12-15 glasses full all the time I would imagine, can be quite hard at times. Anyway, end of the night and the max you get from that table for busting your ass is $18, and you haven't had any other tables because of the big one. Seems a little unfair?

This happens more times than not. Yes, they have chosen that profession, but that doesn't make it right. I'm all for auto gratuity in those situations. If there is a problem and you don't feel the auto gratuity is deserved, then call a manager.

My wife and I share meals , not because we are cheap asses, but because we can't finish 1 meal between us and we end up still taking home left overs. Some waiters are cool with this and still treat us good and I leave them a very nice tip to compensate for us not ordering much. Others turn shitty and ignore us as soon as we explain we are sharing. Those waiters get the shaft.

All of these low tip stories are one sided. Also, who is to say someone did not add that to the receipt...or that he is even a pastor. He might have been an atheist and thought it was funny? Just my 2 cents.
