most places have the server pay both the bar tender and the bus boys a % of their sales. if you run up a $50 tab and lets say they pay 1% to the bar and 1% to the bus, then the waiter owes $1 on your tab. if you stiff them because the food didn't come out on time or wasn't cooked perfect or something else out of their control then you are effectively having them pay for part of your meal.

i don't typically look at my buddies tabs when we go out to eat, but i guess i just roll with good company, i've never seen any of my friends leave less then 15% and most leave ~20%, i agree with whomever said it is a true showing of class.

most waiter make ~2.50-3.00 and hour i believe, this is not a survivable wage, the expectation is obviously that when you go out to eat you fucking tip, if they were all making ~$10-12 an hour then your $15 steak would cost more obviously. if you don't have the money to tip eat at a fast food joint, and if you do have it but don't think 15-20% is fair then you need to wait tables at some point in your life.

I look at it this way. If I go out to eat, I plan on tipping. If I dont feel like tipping I go get fast food or go to the grocery store. Stevo, you seem like a cheap asshole. I tip and tip well for the most part. But it must be earned. No one will dictate to me what i tip. To many people "feel" they are owed something for nothing. There is no real guide line for tipping , except the one made up by people who want to be tipped......for nothing.

I have no problem with the 18% gratuity for 6/8 people or more. Last Saturday I had a couple of beers, my tap was $3.50 (pretty cheap for two schooners of damn cold beer), I gave a $10.00 tip.

That's just silly. I eat out at least 4 or 5 times a week, a I normally tip 20-30% for decent service. That's plenty. Why not just tip 200-300% of you have a burning desire to give a bunch of your money to a waiter?

As a matter of point, I tip most of the time, and I tip well when it warrants. When I get some waitress that chooses to be a bitch and ignore her costumers, her tip suffers. I dropped a $100 tip on New Years Day for a >$50 meal for four because the waitress was very nice, and the restaurant was near empty.

Naw, it was just because she was very nice and it was obvious that she wasn't going to be making much since the place was empty. Most waitresses would be pissy because the place was empty, she was nice and very professional even though she was not making much that day.
