Man I'm glad I haven't done that in years. The extra money was nice, but people are fucking shitty.
All the places I worked at were privately owned, so the 6-8 or more rule was up to the waiter's discretion. At chain places though, it's non negotiable. Waiter can't make the call, and in most cases, neither can the manager. Most of the time, I let them do the tip, and came out ahead. With the exception of the church crowd, middle easterners, teens, and black people.
I never budged on those.
What a person tips, is 100% of the time, a dead on indicator of their character.
