Man I'm glad I haven't done that in years. The extra money was nice, but people are fucking shitty.


All the places I worked at were privately owned, so the 6-8 or more rule was up to the waiter's discretion. At chain places though, it's non negotiable. Waiter can't make the call, and in most cases, neither can the manager. Most of the time, I let them do the tip, and came out ahead. With the exception of the church crowd, middle easterners, teens, and black people.

I never budged on those.


What a person tips, is 100% of the time, a dead on indicator of their character.

I dont mind mandatory tip on big tables. Sounds fair but i also believe u work for ur money. Have a great personality and be good at ur job. I dont run them like a slave but i have tipped plenty 100 percent times cause they are a great worker and i have also tipped nothing cause they suxed

The server probably made notes on some or all of the checks to help keep them separate with one pen, and then had different pens on each when they handed them out.

That happened to me once! I grabbed his beer, threw it in the garbage and told him to get the fuck out. No refund. It was fun to be the owner.

I will do 10% for marginal service but for crappy service I will leave a buck or something really low. With the intent that they get the idea. Good service I do 20%, which is my most common amount. Fantastic service I'll do 25% - 30% if the tab is over $50 or so, if less I'll do between 50% and 100% (high end if my tab is like $20).

If there is a pre-calculated 18% I will leave that for anything up to good service, and will add to it if it was great service.
