If I remember correctly the disability pay is a lot less than normal pay, and like Chili said no overtime and no extra jobs. I know the day after he got shot the Dallas Police Association came in and gave him a check to help with all of the income problems he was about to have.

Cops have it pretty decent until they get hurt, then they are screwed.

Haha, nah, just an optional coverage through my employer. It covers the difference of normal pay and disability pay. It's a couple bucks a paycheck. I started buying it after seeing my dad struggle when he was forced to go on disability a while back.. Not only was he only getting the 60% but much of his compensation was OT, so it was brutal for him.

Given that they already have enough trouble paying them their regular paychecks on time, I doubt they have a cushy disability system set up.

It's been a few years but, I think you just get your base pay. You get put in a occupational leave group for Workmans Comp which is dayshift pay. I would lose quit a bit in just shift differential.

Wounded Fort Worth officer's condition improves

Fort Worth police have identified the officer who was shot and wounded yesterday while confronting a suspect in Haltom City.

Officer John Bell's condition has been upgraded from critical to serious by doctors at John Peter Smith hospital.

Bell is a motorcycle officer assigned to the Traffic division. He has been with the Fort Worth police since March 1992.

Bell was with two other uniformed Fort Worth officers in an auto repair center near Carson Street and Highway 121 on Tuesday when Haltom City police were chasing a suspect.

The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, abandoned his car and ran into the auto shop, confronting the three officers.

Bell was reportedly shot at least three times.

The suspect was shot in the confrontation and taken to the hospital. His condition is not yet known. Haltom City police are still investigating the case.
