  • Feel good story for tonight

Summary, bad guys tore up WW2 vet's house and spray painted the walls. Community stepped in for repairs and Marines showed up to assist.

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- There's a good news update on a home ransacked and spray painted by a pair of teen burglars in northwest Houston. While the burglars are now in custody, community members and Marines stepped in to help the homeowner -- a 93-year-old World War II veteran.

The Marines quickly marched into the defaced home of WWII veteran Elbert Wood, eager to help.

"It's important that he knows we're here for him and that we're always his brothers," Major Roberto Rodriguez said.

The presence of these local Marines is just one example of the outpouring of support for Wood since we first reported the burglary and vandalism of his home on Monday. Two teens, ages 13 and 16, were arrested for allegedly committing the crime.

"My feelings about them are not anger so much as just wondering why they would do something like that," Wood said.

Since then, calls came in from around the country, as former Marines and strangers offered to paint the graffiti-laden walls or replace the damaged household items. Gallery Furniture dropped off a living room set.

Wood's daughter Mary Ellen Hopperdietzel said, "I feel that a fuss is made because he is a World War II veteran. But the fact of it is, this is devastating no matter who it happens to."

The Wood family says it's still trying to comprehend all the support shown their father, who also just lost his wife last month. For today, it's obvious the presence of fellow Marines brought a smile to his face, as he coaxed the younger Marines into an impromptu singing of the Marine Corps hymn.

Some contractors and builders also stopped by to assess the situation. They will return to complete the cleanup and repairs.

His daughter sounds kinda bitchy though I get what she means. Maybe this is a time to say "Thank you" & stfu other than praising the help @ Marines for bringing a smile to her father's face.

I'd have been thanking them the whole time. Yes, she should have closed her mouth, and said 'Thank you". The court should have had the teens out there with scrub brushes to help. Maybe they'd have learned something

Semper Fidelis is not just some empty motto. I saw that first-hand up until, and even after my Father passed away. Marines take care of their own, no matter what.
"It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."

The short article has one quote from the daughter, I highly doubt that's all she had to say about it all. Surely she was thankful and all, and that was her attempt at a little humility.

I do tend to give people too much credit sometimes though, so maybe she is just being bitchy.

I said it sounds bitchy, but I understand what she's saying. She maybe could have worded it better?

I read it as more of a PSA in the context that it would be devastating to anyone, and it probably wouldn't be a newsworthy event if he were a 30 year old any man whose neighbors pitched in to help. The media tends to latch on to things like this only on slow news days. It is awesome and I'm glad to see stories like this hit the wire. All too often it's the shitty people of the world who make the news and the good deeds go unnoticed.
