good cheap hatchback for around 3500ish??

what would you buy/keep an eye out for.

since I live in NRH, work in southlake and go to school in Arlington my gas milage is starting to become a concern so I will be getting rid of the party van.

would like something with a hatch for cargo reasons or a nice trunk. preferably good on gas but reliability is key. no civic hatch's, they cost to much unmolested and get stolen too often. too bad crx's are all hacked up too.

are Toyota matrix/celica/Pontiac vibe's cheap? or mazda3,fordfocus? looking for ideas guys so post em up
