Stuff beside a railroad track

Anyone find something valuable along the tracks and sell it or keep it?

I haven't researched the laws yet, but I'm sure the railroad has claim to it if they know about said item.

Heard a guy put a giant magnet on a pickup and cut a hole in the bed of the truck and drove down the tracks collecting the old spikes and metal beside the track.

I know that most of your scrap yards will call the police if you bring them any type of railroad iron..

But im not sure about the old cross ties that they pull up and leave there

Curious what people find, so i googled "found beside railroad" and got 3 pages of "body/skull/msc body part/legless body found by railroad"

From all the stuff I have seen being a conductor walking down the tracks everyday. I would stay as far away as possible. I've seen junkies shooting up and throwing their needles everywhere. I've seen railcars get loose and go rolling down the tracks for miles. I've almost been decapitated by a bum throwing a bumper out of a gondola railcar. I've seen huge rattle snakes in the railcars and on the ballast. Not to mention how rusted and jagged stuff is. Do you really think that even if it is legal would it be worth it?
