They should also be allowed to wear RFI|] jammers.

That was my question. If they're losing $1.7M a year on students not wanting to be in class, they're not holding intelligent kids accountable for their actions.

Change the way we fund the schools. Let each district operate on the taxes they collect. If the kids don't show up, so what. Let them stay stupid. Then as student population goes down, release teachers and close buildings. Hell, we might even be able to lower taxes. If we end up with a dumb class, let them starve. Who would really care. Life has choices.

Because the NAACP have better lawyers.

"We don't want to see this kind of intrusive surveillance infrastructure gain inroads into our culture," ACLU senior policy analyst Jay Stanley said. "We should not be teaching our children to accept such an intrusive surveillance technology."
Umm, can these guys look at the policies for my last two places of employment. They both required me to swipe my access card before gaining entrance to the building and then use the same card to clock in. Please set me free of this intrusive surveillance technology

Swiping a badge at entry and when getting paid by the hour is your voluntary choice.

These kids have to go to school and RFID can always be passively scanned to keep tabs on students the entire time they are within antenna range.

To give you an idea of antenna range - some WIFI antennas can reach over 1500 miles and that signal must be stronger.

I was under the impression that a passive RFID tag (non battery powered and and much cheaper than an active tag) has an extremely limited range (as in 1-25 feet, maybe upwards to 100). Our distribution system uses them to track packages coming and going between the various facilities. They cannot track in real time but only when an item left and has arrived. Using active tags to track in real time would have been extremely expensive and cost prohibitive.

Do you have any links for me to read?

If we could just put ELVIS in charge of parent education, schools wouldn't have these problems

You can debate that she's at a magnet school and her acceptance to the program was voluntary.

Ok, my co-worker used to be an RFID engineer, I just bounced some things off of him.

A non-battery powered RFID source would need a considerable strength antenna and need to be tuned specifically to the frequency of the RFID implementation. So it would have to be some entity with deep pockets to pull off pulling range from over say 20-30 ft. That takes most of the chester concerns out of it. As far as real time , you would have to have a reader every 10-30 feet to get real-time data.

I stand corrected on that front.

For battery powered devices the range is much greater but this depends on the battery and antenna strength. He told me a range of a mile or over is possible but again it would have to be performed by some entity with deep pockets and engineers who knew more about the technology.

As far as jamming, RFID hates metal, and even those metal lined bags computer parts come in will kill an RFID signal.

My point is typical WIFI has a range of 10-50 feet or so also depending on antenna strength. We know this b/c when you go in your backyard or front yard depending on where your router is you lose signal and everything loads slow or loses connection. It is known there are certain entities that have WIFI cannons out there that can be specifically targeted to sniff WIFI signal from over 1000 miles away. If this is possible, IMO sniffing RFID signal could be possible too.

While it was posted previously, this article is an update. The last one was about a student suing the district. This one is an update, where the Jusge upheld the school's decision. So technically, it's not a repost. Welcome to today. Reading. Not just for school students.
