Depending on how much it'd cost to rent one, it may be cheaper. Besides, this site is full of master mechanics. I'm sure it'd have a good looking over.

That's quite a bit less than I thought. I thought you had to add mileage on top and other stuff.

It's not near as expensive as I thought it would be to rent. Tahoe/Expedition/Suburban is between $400-$600 for a week, most unlimited mileage. Just need to find a 4WD one. Anybody know someone that works for rental company?

One thing you may think about....take one of your vehicles out a little closer, like New Mexico or Southern Colorado, rent from there and use their vehicle up that way only instead of the whole trip. This should save you some rental time, and you are more apt to find a 4x4 up that way too. A lot of these places will let you leave your car parked in their lot as well....maybe even covered if they have the space.

                  Just a thought.

The closer you get to the mountains, the more expensive it is. Most places offer unlimited mileage, so if you really want it for a week or so, it's better to get and return it around here, I would think.

The real question is how much will he actually need the 4x4? If just because he wants to spend a day or two off road I woudl still think it better to rent there. It also seems that one of his obstacles is actually finding a guaranteed 4x4 locally.

Exactly. That's why we always booked them in Lake City before I had my own, and we just planned on one or two days of 4x4 stuff. But if he is using it for the road trip and getting around, being winter, he prob would need it for the whole time. They are way too expensive for that, even 100 miles out from the mountains.

I guess it's tough to find one here because it's not really a necessity in TX. The company I work for books travel for people all the time and it's never difficult to fid a 4x4 in any state that gets snow.

I'm still having no luck locally. Spent 3 hours on the phone today even calling the corporate offices of these companies.

Anyone want to rent me one for $500 for a week?
