Rented a 2012 cc silverado 2500 hd duramax 4x4 from capps with 200 miles on it. It pulled those colorado mtns like a mofo with 12k behind like it wasnt even there. It also did quite well on half of the alpine loop.

I've rented fullsize 4x4 SUV's from Avis on numerous occasions. One thing you may think about....take one of your vehicles out a little closer, like New Mexico or Southern Colorado, rent from there and use their vehicle up that way only instead of the whole trip. This should save you some rental time, and you are more apt to find a 4x4 up that way too. A lot of these places will let you leave your car parked in their lot as well....maybe even covered if they have the space.

I know a few of the car rental places have them (4X4's) but none of them will reserve one, they will only guarantee a full size SUV. It's luck of the draw if you get 4WD or not. Anyways, thanks for most of yous guys's input.

Here is a quick google for a place in Lake City. A lot of people go up there and stay in cabins or the small hotels, and just rent toys when they want to head up the mountain.
