So it seems like it existed but they just called it other things? Again, not being from a military family I don't really have any experiences with the older generations going through war. My great grandpa had his leg amputated by a mine in WWII, but my parents and grandparents say he was the nicest guy in the world. Then again, I guess it's not good karma to speak ill of the dead.

I just didn't know if it's like how now everybody is allergic to everything and everybody is depressed and has ADHD and all this shit that in my opinion is an excuse for people not wanting to take responsibility for their actions and lives.

We have a Vet from the Afghanistan fight that just started going to our church. He has PTSD so bad that they gave him a service dog. The dog is a German Shepard that can tell when this vet is having issues and prompt him to take his medication. I don't know all the details but it seemed to be helping this poor fella a lot. Plus he gets one helluva cool dog to walk with him anywhere he goes, even church...

A lot of the older vets just drank themselves to death instead of seeking help.

          Well, that might explain it.

We also didn't have the support structure of being able to talk via internet where we can stay in the safety of our homes and air things out. It helps considerably. To be serious for a moment, any time I talk about serving, it's therapy. And most will notice I really never talk about the bad stuff. Ever. Jokes, training, fucked up stuff we did but not the bad stuff.

Ever hear any WWII or Viet Nam vets talking about their war experiences? Nope. They mostly kept/keep that shit to themselves which is why we never hear them claiming PTSD. I've wondered if they were a tougher generation or what.

One of my closet friends is VV, he was a customer of mine and over the years we becameclose friends. Some of the stories hes told me will bring chills to your spine. Hes perfectly fine has a purple heart, etc. And is a pilot for American Airlines, doesnt smoke or do any type of drugs. He doesnt get this PTSD but knows that some guys just dont have the mental capability to deal with the horrors of war.

Studies have shown a few things, and I can pull up my presentation I gave at Angelo State if anyone's interested.

                  1. PTSD effects the hypocampus, shrinking it thus causing issues with memory and ability to appropriately handle stress.

                  and the second one
PTSD is found more in soldiers who return who do not have strong ties to the community and do not have family or loved ones to support them in the first year or so after the traumatic event. When WW2 soldiers returned, they were tough, no doubt but they were regarded universally as heroes. That's why you see a lot more Vietnam guys so fucked up. They were despised.

I've done a few studies and evaulated myself. My PTSD would be less severe if it wasn't coupled with a severe TBI, an abusive exwife, lack of treatment, rapid discharge by the VA, homelessness after discharge and lack of medication for years. Basically you take the worst things you can do afterwards and that was me. But that was in 04. Soldiers get counseling now and have classes and exit processing and the VA offers rapid counseling services as well. I'd probably have less severe effects if I lived closer to a treatment facility where I could undergo the suggested 3 times a week therapy, sleep treatment and intensive supervised treatment. But I don't because I do not trust, I do not like people and that means moving to a city which won't work.

So, in short: If you are treated well after your injury and are accepted, odds are good you will get past it and move on.

Well, it can be pretty fucking traumatic to be honest. Saw a guy shave his eyebrows off and try to kill himself by slitting his wrists and guys try to escape every day. Been plenty of suicides in bootcamp.
I dont know if it gives you PTSD or anything like that, but it damned sure isnt a cake walk.

I saw a guy decide to kill himself by tying the cord of the DS' buffer around his neck and throwing the buffer out the 3rd story window. On Sunday morning. The Drill saw his buffer pass by him on the way up to look in on us

The cord was WAY longer than the distance to the ground. By the time the drill got up to our barracks, homeboy was standing at the window, looking at the busted machine and was white as a sheet. He figured out what he had done about the time the door burst open and we yelled "At Ease!"

Drill said "Who the FUCK threw my buffer out...wait...what the fuck are you doing?"

                          "Umm..."

"Umm? You threw my fucking buffer out the window? Why didn't you jump out you stupid bastard?"

                          "Umm..."

"Fucking beat your face. You and you <pointing out two of us> make sure he doesn't try to choke himself on tile while I call mental health. Fucking idiot Joe."

We also had a guy who had a friend send him a sheet of acid written on a letter. I have no idea about acid dosage but he way over did it over a 4 day on Thanksgiving and saw all sorts of shit. The fact we were coming up with things to talk to him about seeing didn't help. You should have seen him goingt o the bathroom thinking the floor was molten lava
