    good advice.

i already received mine, but have little desire to be a manager at this time.

And Roscoe, i'm all about improving the work place. I've just been frustrated from the last few weeks of his attitude and the way he talks to me specifically as if he is trying to put me down. I should mention that his attitude towards the other guy in our group is completely different.

My backup plan if this continues is to ask our VP for a department change or possible relocation.

Ive had some douche ass bosses in my life that had no business what so ever being in the role they where in. Most eventually get canned, some figure out a way to skate by.

Most everyone is a management role plays off who they are under. Do your job, make the person above you look good, and in turn you look good.

One thing i learned in some of my travels. Its not always about how good of a job you can do, but how well you can talk.

if he's acting like his immediate boss, then it's because he's trying to follow his example.

best thing to do is talk to him about what motivates you specifically and what de-motivates you. If him talking to you that way is a de-motivator then he needs to know it.

A lot of people who aren't ready to manage people end up copying the closest manager to them, which may or may not be a bad thing. My direct boss is a cool guy, and I've learned a lot from him that has helped leading the team I'm on. He's been mentoring me for over a year to take his job at some point, and I think if I can manage like he does, I'll do alright here.

Yeah i'll just need to man up and figure out when/how to say what I am seeing without it backfiring on me or coming across the wrong way.

What type of work are we talking here? Also how many people are under the new boss?

I had a similar problem a couple years ago. A co-worker was promoted to Lead Sys Admin on a trial basis. This was a guy that had about 4 years max of total IT experience and basically just an ass kisser IMO. The Sr. Sys Admin was even passed up for the position even though the Sr. would have been the better choice.

As soon as that happened, he changed from partial douche to full time douche. I couldn't take it too long. I had to be the first one to have a 1 on 1 with our boss about it...what sucks is that I knew that meant disagreeing with a decision my boss made and that typically doesn't turn out well. I also did my best to get the others to speak up as well since they felt the same way. This full time douche would literally pass the grunt work to the others and he decided what kind of work he wanted to do.

The end result was that he was removed from that trial position. But I think it ultimately lead to my dismissal from that company within the year. The co-worker at one point wanted my honest opinion about what I thought he did wrong so I gave him the feedback. He didn't like it but he admitted that he blew it.

I know that every new manager will have to learn "how" to manage before they hopefully become a great manager but my take is that his on the job learning will have an affect on my career...and I couldn't allow that. Had he been given that position permanently, I would have moved on.

I guess I don't really have a point other than if you choose to give him feedback, be careful what you say since he is now your boss.

***Also, after re-reading what I wrote, I think what really annoyed me is how all of this was taking place. We were told it was a Lead Sys Admin position but I was approached by others in different departments about my new manager. And I'm not really the kind of guy that likes to play political games.

Sounds like he was delegating the work. That's part of being a manager. However only taking the easy work isn't being a good leader. I haven't done much in the way of sys admin work since being made team lead, I spend a lot more time on conference calls and delegating work as well as following up on what others are doing. I really don't have the time to take on much of the work load from the rest of the admins. I also passed over a guy with tenure, but he wasn't management material.

i'm definitely not hating, I just wish he acted like he did before he got the promotion and not talk down to us. Or jump on my ass for offering an alternative solution to a problem we may run across.
