    Whats your take on people who get promoted to a manager position and who have never had to manage people before?

    A co-worker was promoted to manager, and holy shit balls what a 180 he did with his personality and how he talks to others now. Its like this nigga has a god complex or something. Fuck.

    People aren't born having already managed people before, they have to start somewhere.

    In the case above, I would say that whomever was responsible for promoting should also be accountable for developing them.

      absolutely agree! but in this case it won't help since "his" manager our vp is the same way.

        When I got promoted to Asst. Manager at 24 Hour Fitness I treated people the same as I did before I was manager and holy shit did my manager hate it. In a corporate environment they really want there to be a dividing line between management and non management, almost like they're not only inferior in position but as a whole.

                Remember to coach up, dude. If your new manager is showing how green he is, pull him aside, and give him constructive feedback when no one else is around. Don't be the guy sniping him in the meetings with pointed questions, either.

                  you HAVE to change.. but can't be a dick about it

                  when I became manager and then director I had to cut down the personal interaction with the non management employees. upper management would still hang out after hours and BS just like before but you can only BS up, not down

                  it is SUPER hard to go from co-worker to boss... when I got my own dept it was MUCH easier because the people coming in under you aren't your friends/previous co-workers.

                  AND.. the co-workers that do not get promoted ALWAYS thing the promoted person turns into the asshole because of the change that he/she HAS to make to be considered a good pick for the role

                    THIS.... he's nervous about the change.. .he has to impress the uppers... he has to keep the department moving in a positive direction and needs all the support and help he can get since he's new to the role

                      I was going to give that little love nugget to him as well, but when you say "this nigga has a god complex" it leads me to believe that there is no value in looking to improve the working environment.

                            Your job is to make his job easier. (This also makes your job easier.)

                            Effective management is not something people learn right away, if ever. My first management role wasn't smooth because I suddenly had responsibility over people that were my equals prior and it was a little rough. I never had a chance to get things sorted out because I was transferred to another store shortly after. Having a fresh start somewhere else made establishing proper working relationships a hell of a lot easier. Give him time to figure it out.
