Yup! I hate my job/life. I need a change, but I can't decide what I want to do.

I love my job for the most part(car mechanic) money could be better but i don't hate getting up on mondays. In the past i totally hated what i did(trucker). However it paid the bills, my motivation then was, i like to shit indoors.

        Craig,

I'm kind of in that boat too, being i'm trying to figure out with path I need to follow.

The choice I made is what made sense to me. I've been in the IT field for about 4.5 years now and am just now going back to school. I thought about going to school for something different than IT, but the way I figure it, in 4/5 years when I'm done with school, i'll have 8.5/9.5 years experience in IT.

I mean things can change and I can get terminated between here and there, but why change my field? If say I went into the medical field i'd have ZERO experience out of school, so it made sense to me to stick with IT.

Build on the experience that you have... experience goes a long way.

My friend's parents do a lot of thrift shopping for antiques and sell them on eBay. If you can start to train your eye on things that could make profit, it would be a fun, profitable hobby!

I think most people can relate to your situation, including myself. I know my four day weekend, on new years, had me dreading monday.

I know the things I enjoy, the trick right now is starting a business from it. I think the ultimate goal would be to be my own boss but don't have the start-up money or experience to do anything like that. On the pay side, I took a big paycut when I was laid off so it wouldn't be such a big impact to "start over", I guess I just need to start putting pen to paper and see what I want to do.

yea, in retail middle management (district manager), pay is good, but long term career this isnt what i want to be doing. my thing is, i am trying to find out exactly what id love to do. ive been in retail for 8 years now and i cant do this for 30 more years. With a wife, kids and mortgage i have to make sure my ducks are in a row before jumping ship for sure. at this point im leaning toward opening my own business, problem is ive yet to decide what is in demand that will stay in demand that i can start for 40k or less that will excel with great customer service.

I tried to win the Lotto last night... that didn't work.

My dream job would be working a successful ranch and restoring cars on the side and selling them.

I'am in the same boat as in all of you are. Been out of work since September and currently still no job. Been thinking of doing my own thing either starting a car/home stereo shop or a fishing guide service out on lake tawokoni, lake fork. Really just kind of lost on how to start, what to do , can I do it.

Make it happen! You're a bright guy and very personable, I could see you running you're own show.

What is your ideal business? (don't have to answer if you don't think it's any of our business yet)

I never had any idea i'd be in the industry I am, and while it's not great it's good and there's potential to make good money. However I feel that my calling in life is not to be a desk jockey. I've made some choices and have some pretty stout goals to accomplish this year, but if it all pans out right i'll be doing what I love and getting paid for it. In the meantime, i'm ending a contract today and hopefully being flown out for an interview sometime early next week. If I can just make it until this summer, I feel like i'll survive anything.

Life is great. I'm working towards my goal everyday training to one day have my own school. Meeting some of the most amazing people along the way as well. But I'm not forgetting to appreciate every day that I wake up to be with my family day in and day out.

While it's nice to dream about what could be or the things we want, it's important not to forget what we do have and the people we have around us. Every day is a gift, treat it as such.

here is my main question- are there tests or books to source to narrow down what kind of business or industry would fit me best? (to own my own) I am looking at all service oriented industries from landscape to pest control to roofing and nothing really 'jumps' out to me. all i know is i really think id love doing my own thing, its just finding that one business idea that is the big question.

I'm just working until I can afford to open my own business. After that, I'm working until I can either sell it and live off of it, or have someone else manage it, and live off the income. Hopefully that would be a motivated individual that would like to buy it from me, as soon as they saved enough.
