Why did you make a screen name "jasone"? Then of course go on with the "red dragons" and such. You're not Jason Ellis. Am I the first person that caught on to this?
His name is really Jason "E". So in reality you have caught on to nothing.

here is my main question- are there tests or books to source to narrow down what kind of business or industry would fit me best? (to own my own) I am looking at all service oriented industries from landscape to pest control to roofing and nothing really 'jumps' out to me. all i know is i really think id love doing my own thing, its just finding that one business idea that is the big question.
Do you like to tinker around the house doing odd jobs? Maybe start up your own small in home repair / maintenance company?
Anything from wiring a fan, installing closet shelves, carpeting a room, tiling a bathroom, painting interior/exterior, etc. That's what I've always wanted to do but got stuck behind a desk in '97 and never looked back

I'd run my junk through a waffle iron, if it makes you more "comfortable". LOL!

Yes, care to enlighten us?

I'm stuck working in IT...not the job of my dreams. I've been here 14 years now and I could up and find something else I'd like to do, but short of working for myself, no one else is gonna give me a month off every year paid. (I get 28 days vacation). I'm at the point though where I know I may as well go ahead and retire from here - which I can do in 11/12 years from now...but start looking forward to a 2nd career that I enjoy. I don't wanna be a Dave Ramsey type - but I think I'd enjoy helping people get out of debt. No financial planning - like helping people pick stocks - but forming a plan and helping them get debt free and stay that way. Just not sure where to start - and not sure there's really any money in that.
Those who aren't sure which direction to go should look into the AIMS Institue. http://www.aimstesting.org/index.html It's not like the apititude test you took in high school, this is 2.5 days (20 hours) of tests and then they pinpoint your personality type and give you about 20 jobs you should enjoy with a few "first choices" that are all but guaranteed to be good for you. It was $750 or so about 4 years ago, not sure about now - but well worth it. People come from all over the country to take it. I had no idea what I wanted to do so I took the test. It gave me a direction so we called some family friends, I shadowed a couple, one turned into an internship, which led me to the job I'm at now and I still enjoy it (which says a lot after these last two years - I originate mortgages).
Those that want to get into rental property need $$$. There are no more 0% down investment property loans, or even 5-10% - it is now minimum 20% and you're better off at 25% down. You're also now limited (by FNMA) to 10 financed properties (including your primary). A 700+ FICO is needed or you'll be paying 2-3 points for a halfway decent rate.
There is a lot to be said for enjoying what you do. Sometimes I don't want to come to work, not because I don't want to do what I do but because of the bullshit I have to put up with when I get here. Things like office politics get really old. I see going out on my own as a way to get rid of that aspect of it.
Agreed, I hate office politics, etc. I get more work done from 5:30 - 7 than 8:30 - 5:30 (and that's without leaving for lunch).
I didn't read the entire thread so excuse me if I repeat something said...
The often given advice of "find something you love and then figure out how to get paid doing it" is very short sighted. I mean, I like watching TV but I'm not gonna make money doing it. I like skateboarding but I'm not turning pro any time soon. Keep your hobbies as hobbies and get a real job in order to make money. Find something that pays well that you can be interested in. eg, if you like modifying cars don't become a mechanic, become an engineer; if you like drawing don't become an artist, become an architect.
because in the end , jobs are for making money. Good luck!
Wifey was a long time dispatcher for many years. She got sucked into thinking it was good money and interesting when she was young, kinda what I thought about being a manager at Minyards. One day I asked her what she would like to do in life and she said since she was a kid she wanted to be an athletic trainer. I said f it get a part time job to cover gas and books and I will cover the rest. She now realizes what its like to love a job. She has about one year left and loves every minute of it. She told me she will never work again in her life because she doesnt think of her career choice as work at all. Same way with becoming a cop. I worked for Minyards for 12 years and in the end hated every minute of it. On a whim a guy hired me to do sales and even though that was a great job that I was very good at the money was never there. Then I thought hmmmm I have always wanted to be a cop. Got my fat ass in shape, took the test, and never looked back. Great benefits, very interesting, and no day is ever the same. I have a blast every day even though my city can be a beating at times.
After all the college crap I’ve done and payed for in cash. It just doesn't seem to make me happy regardless of the good jobs I’ve had with these degrees. I have always been happy doing construction such as laying bricks. It just seems to fulfill me and my well being. Sure its great to get paid more doing other stuff but mentally I’m happy without the office politics an drama that comes with working the corporate world. Besides most importantly I’m not worrying about getting laid off because I own my shit so fuck'em I say an I worked hard to get here and master my craft. There isn’t any good schools to teach you this stuff just the hard knocks way of learning.
You can't enjoy the sweet without ever tasting the sour.
“There will be, in the next generation or so, a pharmacological method of making people love their servitude, and producing dictatorship without tears, so to speak, producing a kind of painless concentration camp for entire societies, so that people will in fact have their liberties taken away from them, but will rather enjoy it, because they will be distracted from any desire to rebel by propaganda or brainwashing, or brainwashing enhanced by pharmacological methods". Aldous Huxley 1962
