yeah, you put choices 1-3 on there and hope you get the one you want. You'll go ride a couple 24s with one of those departments on the ambulance. if you're lucky they wont treat you like a leper (DFR did that to me). You'll ride in the back and get to carry shit into scenes and take vitals. The fun rideouts are when you finish medic school and actually get to do shit. once you get your medic, you can always try to get on an FD and have them send you to fire school, unless you're just ballin outta control and can take all that time off. I've been working for ETMC since april and been a lead medic since june. great company to work for if you wanna get some 911 experience.

and you dont always get your selected department and shift. Your classmates also sign up for days.

When I went through EMT-B I did my rideouts with Farmers Branch FD, Medic was spent with Irving FD Station 4. I enjoyed my hours spent with IFD. IFD had a good group of guys that treated you well. Farmers branch did too, but 2 shifts is not enough to gauge the dept. If I had stayed in the DFW metro area Irving was on my short list of depts to work for.

Also stated above get your medic and get hired by a dept and let them send you to fire school. This was the route that I had went.

My advice is to ride out with Irving FD. The guys on Medic 10 are great...we see them a lot in the ER. Farmers Branch and Carrollton get a lot less calls. If you really want some good calls, ride out with station 1, 2, 3 or 4 in South Irving. Some ghetto areas with the occasional gunshot or stabbing. North Irving isnt as good but you see more accidents with 114, 161 and 635

I get to pick departments and shifts.

You will be able to pick which ones you would like to go to, but the final say will be the schools. Im pretty sure though that as an EMT-B, you only do one 24 shift at a department, the rest are all ER rotations.
