  • Lefty guitar recommendations

I was checking www.musiciansfriend.com and www.guitarcenter.com and was wanting input which would be the best beginner's guitar for under $500.

    TIA

Both fender and gibson will have guitars under 500 in lefty mode.

Buy the best one you can afford. Even then the tuners might be shit and will need replaced with good ones. Go up to guitar center and look. They used to keep a wall for left handed folks. You can tell the quality difference.

      Strings optional.

I was thinking Fender, Gibson, Yamaha, or Takamine. I'd never heard of Seagull before.

Should I stay away from a dreadnaught?

Electric, acoustic/electric, or acoustic? Fender's Mexican-made electrics are very hard to beat. They come in strat or telecaster models. In acoustic/electric, Takamine and Yamaha are hard to beat. Yamaha has a new series of guitars out that are great for the money. I'd run by a Guitar Center and check them out. They have 15% off coupons to go along with some screaming end-of-the-year deals.

Just acoustic for now. My youngest has a normal acoustic and an electric that he hasn't touched in a couple of years. I just wished I was right handed.

There are 2 left-handed Washburn D12S's on Craigslist as we speak. They want $75 each, and it say's "new in the box". That's less than half of what Guitar Center gets. These are "solid-top" guitars, and superb for starters/beginners. Have a nice "set-up" done (so it plays easily) and be done.

My dad bought me an electric acoustic Ovation - it was right handed..

I converted it myself to lefty. I only did this because it's a 100$ guitar and works for a beginner.

Also I've had luck finding decent deals in Pawn Shops on lefties.

Electric is easier to learn on period. Go that route

if you've never played just learn to play right handed. takes both hands anyway .

Easier said than done I'm sure. No way I could play left handed.

Funny how that works. I write and punch lefty, but play guitar and golf righty. I also throw righty, but switch-hit in high school baseball. No way could I play guitar or golf lefty.

both hands have to be trained at once. have a couple of wrong handed friends who learned on right hand guitar and still play that way .

                            Exactly.

I've helped a few beginners get started and had the best luck with either a Mexican strat or a squire strat. The Mexican strats these days are on par with the USA models. I know tons of guys that like their mexi strats much more than their us ones. And with a good checkover and proper setup the squiers are also nice guitars. Gibson's QC these days is practically nonexistent, their guitars are overpriced as hell.

But no matter what guitar you get, whether its electric or acoustic, get it the once over and have a proper setup done. Don't have it done at a major chain store though. Find a local mom and pop type of shop that has a good rep with local musicians. You'll get a more personal, better quality job 99% of the time.

My sister is completely right handed, but shoots left handed. I am right handed, but I can do anything with my left hand. Brush my teeth, write, bowl, play tennis, eat, etc.
