Wife and i would like to take the girls up to Colorado for a few days to exeprience some real snow fall. My main concern though when planning is access. Towns like Ouray and Lake City seem like much more of a gamble to access than say those closer to larger roads such as Vail, Keystone and Bailey.

If you have traveled up there in the winter, are some cities at higher elevations easier to access than others or does CDOT plow most roads frequently? If so, which are the easier to access? We considered Durango, then quickly realized Wolf Creek might be a bear.

CDOT fucks TxDot in the ass when it comes to road maintenance. Anything off of i70 will be cleared because of the traffic coming through. Dillion is the access point to Breckenridge and they have some really cool touristy type stuff, the city runs a park that has a hill with large inner tube rides that is great for kids.

Anyplace with a park or resort will be clear.

If you get caught in a storm it sucks, but they have that shit cleared by morning.

I thought of something completely different when it said Colorado and your screen name looks like smoker.

This. Travel during the day is pretty safe, but at night can be sketchy. I would recommend awd/4wd, it might be required at some places. The larger the resort the more of a chance that the roads will be in better condition.
