not all schools are as lucky to have that many officers is the point you are missing."If I asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses." - Henry Ford

With all the budget cuts and deficits the schools are facing, they can't afford to hire armed security/police. It makes much more financial sense for the school to pay for training and get some of the staff CHL's and have them carry at all times..."Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." - Thomas Jefferson, 1776

I honestly don't know what the basis for argument is. You think that your wife's school needs more than two armed personnel on campus, and I'm not disagreeing. I see no issues with teachers carrying if the district can't afford to employ more officers.

I think it stemmed from this comment:

I really don't see how a teacher with a CHL would be much different.

I've never said that I believed the number of officers was justified. I'm actually of the opinion that it is excessive to have that many officers in a school of 2,000 students. We were there just a couple of years after the shooting, while it was still fresh in everyone's mind. At some point, it just became the status quo.

Seeming like you were saying that there were enough already.
I will say that I'm not sure how much good that many officers really did. We literally had a precinct office on campus, but the major altercations weren't occurring where officers were. Most fights were disbanded by teachers with officers making reports and arresting offending parties as needed. We were subject to random searches, wandings, and drug sniffing. I can only remember a few instances where something of significance was found. The only ones that come to mind were a hunting rifle after a weekend at the deer lease and a large knife that had no business being in a kid's car. Given my experience, it seems more useful to give teachers the option of carrying and students not knowing who's carrying.Last edited by Treasure Chest; 12-19-2012, 03:03 PM.
