Sorry to hear about this.. It's dangerous enough out there in a car, let alone on a bicycle. One thing I have never understood here is the lack of emergency lanes, or at least some space on the roads. Growing up in CA there was always a good 8' or more on the side of the right lane. Here, too many streets are barely wide enough for 2 lanes and butt right up to the curbs.

No doubt it's a sad situation for everyone. Everytime I ride in the dark though, I'm aware of the risks...which is why I stay on sidewalks. I agree that some of the sidewalks, at least where I live, can be jacked up and I've almost wiped out a few times before but I still don't ride on the street.
