Anyone willing to trade my 2.3t for a 5.3l? Hell I'd be happy with the 600hp they got with low boost.

Welding the rings aren't the problem, it's butting the ends - which in turn knocks out the ring lands.

There's a BUNCH of cars around the US using those motors and big turbos running WAY into the 9's and a handful of them running into the 8's.

The article in hot rod did it with a 4.8, and the dyno shop said that the main reason their engine lived was because of the big turbine housings causing it to make boost much later in the RPM range and saving the rods.

There are some pretty stout 4.8 Turbo motors running around too. I plan on pulling the 4.8 in my new Lawn Truck & replacing it with a 5.3 with simple Bolt Ons & then putting in forged rods & pistons in my 4.8 & going turbo in the old Lawn Truck

no, these are the stock pistons. measured the gap on it and it showed between .012-.014 new pistons are gapped at .026 i believe.

all of the other pistons had gaps of .016-.018, a few thousands loose no prob, a few thousands tight and you've got big problems.

motor ran perfect with this piston in it, only knew something was wrong cause it made a little noise.

You had a timing/boost problem not a ring problem. Had you not ran 17 lbs and 17* you wouldn't have had that happen.

I really wish I understood this stuff better. Fact of the matter is, I'm a complete moron when it comes to stuff like this and a disaster with any tool in my hand aside from a screwdriver or hammer. I found myself getting lost in the article and just fast-forwarded to the end for the numbers. Impressive though.

so a tight gap wont pull the upper ring land off as the piston goes down the bore with a seized ring?

i've seen tons of pistons posted that broke from detonation and they broke the lower lands from the pressure against the top ring into the lower lands.

motor made lots of passes @ 16* of timing, then one night i semi-hot lap it and it pulls the upper land off, on #7 which had the tightest gap and is known to run hottest?

either way it is speculation. without having been inside the motor neither of us can prove it popped for anyone one reason.
