I should clarify, it's not for me (seriously, not just trying to cover my ass). It's for a lady I know who has two dogs and two small children that play in her backyard. Her neighbor spotted one and it didn't seem at all afraid of being near people, and simultaneously reports have been circulating about coyotes in the area attacking cats and dogs in peoples' yards. She is a CHL holder and didn't know whether or not she could just shoot one if it came on her property. Seems like that word "recklessly" could be used either for or against the case, but I wouldn't hesitate to place a clean headshot if a coyote went after my kids (if I had kids) or my dog.

Firing bullets over kids heads to kill the coyote I do find reckless!

A round in the dirt will scare off the coyote.

Coyotes are cool. We have a ton of them in the field behind the house. Noisy bastards sometimes, but I dig it.

Get tougher pets, or at least keep a better eye on them when they go outside. Coyotes can jump right up and over just about any fence, much like a cat.

There was a smallish cat that my gf's folks were feeding and letting hang around in their back yard. It vanished one day, but it could have been the hawks just as easily as the coyotes. Tons of them around, too.

You can shoot them if you are careful about it. When I lived in Plano I shot plenty of them. What worked for me was doing it from inside of my house. Open a window slightly and take the shot from 3 or 4 feet back from the window; use a .22 rifle. Not even my nosey neighbor knew that I was doing it.
