Holiday workers

How many of you guys work the holidays and have family, ie. wife and kids, at home? I do and let me tell ya, this shit sure is getting old. The people I work with don't care too much about the holidays because they either don't have kids or their kids are already old so they don't really understand why i would like to be home. I know work is a part of life but damn. I can't keep missing Thanksgiving and Christmas with my 6yr old's. The boy asked me if I could call in to work today since I never call in anyway, I probably should have and dealt with the consequences later but love don't pay the bills. Oh well. Checking in from work and I'll be here for Christmas again. Yay.

I've worked thanksgiving for the last 7 years until today. I volunteer every year but I was needed more on Wednesday so I worked then. Honestly I was just bored most of the day.

I'm getting better. I've used 2 of my 5 weeks this year. One week was just random days here and there. One actual vacation. I say actual.... I worked a few hours a day.

It's about fucking time! I'll probably try that in a couple years.minfinally got some good help, but like you I'm still tied to my phone and email when I'm not in the office.

I have tons of pto but management made a that if you are scheduled to work on the holidays, you must work and if you want pto on the holidays you have to find your own replacement. Since no one wants to work holidays, they also made a new rule a few years back that if you work any holiday the year before, you get the next holiday off but I guess they got rid of that before I got a chance to take advantage of it. What sucks is that when I first started here 10 years ago, I was young , had no kids and nothing to do so I always volunteered to help out my coworkers so that they would be off on whatever holiday they wanted. Now I have kids and I can't catch a break. Bad thing is that we have set schedules so I'll be working the holidays for a few more years to come.

I make it clear at any job I take that I will not work thanksgiving day, Christmas eve or Christmas day. Other days are fine.

Next year at the first of the year schedule your vacation. This will give them plenty of time to get ready for you not going to work and you will be there for your children. They are only young once.

Working 7am-10am this morning. I'd take off but I just started this job and can't take any pto until my 90th day.

I don't mind it, it gets me out of the house where the whole extended family is.....
