Just wondering if anyone here works with a non profit and can share their experiences, more specifically anyone who is on a board or high up. Also if anyone knows of a CPA that works with non-profits (pattymelt doesnt count).

Non-profit? You mean like the government? Never worked for the government..."Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." - Thomas Jefferson, 1776

Im looking to start a new non-profit/charity. As a lot of you guys know, I work as a nurse and you run into people all the time that just need help. Not terribly long ago a lady and her three kids came in and all the mom could say is "I cant make my kids sleep in the car again...". She didnt need medical help, she needed somewhere to stay. People from work chipped in and got her a hotel room for the night so her kids could have a good bed and a hot shower. Then you Leah posted about a lady just needing help (car) and her daughter has Leukemia... Who would she turn to? Leukemia society isnt going to help in that sense. Most other charities wont help with a car. There are lots of people that need help but dont qualify for a certain organization. So thats where I want to make a change.
Fast forward to wanting to help...Looking to start my own charity with extremely low costs to make sure the money gets to where it needs to be. Not sure if you guys realize that large non-profits like Red Cross eat up 25%-30% of the money on fund raising and expenses.
Anyways, starting a nonprofit is slightly intense with formalities and government regulation. To incorporate and get a tax exemption, you need a board of directors, articles of incorporation, bylaws, accounting, etc. Just looking for people that might have experience in this that may be able to give advice on getting started.

I'd recommend finding a local 503(c) and going to a meeting or two to pick their brains. I'd bet you could find a board member or two. The ones I'd hit up are Heros For Children and the North Texas Food Bank (two locally run charities that I feel are reasonably well run).

good website for those looking to donate to the larger charities
Use Charity Navigator's ratings and resources to find and support highly rated charities that align with your passions and values. Whether you're looking to give toward international relief, the environment, animal welfare, or something else, we empower you to donate and volunteer with confidence.
EX: wounded warriors? only 32% of money donated to them goes towards the actual cause
