  • Question for those of you that doing hiring

So I ran into a friend of mine I hadn't seen in a while and he was telling me that he hadn't been employed in over a year since losing his last job. He had gotten arrested for theft and forgery and said no one would hire him which I find hard to believe. I would think some sort of low level retail job would hire him with this on his record and I think he's simply not applying himself enough to looking for a job. What do you guys think?

I don't even have a record and I couldn't get any jobs for 6 months at the first of the year.

manual labor jobs will hiring anyone... if he REALLY wants to work he could do this.

those two back ground issues will be a big negative in retail because those are the two things they have to worry about the most from their employees... theft is one thing but forgery is a big risk for a company

Does that really matter? I'm asking seriously btw. I ask because i look at it as if someone were even just arrested for it, on probation, no conviction unless probation is revoked, isn't it still something a potential employer would feel were grounds for not trusting the person enough to hire? Or even company bi-laws are against hiring someone for an arrest?

Someone close to me was arrested on possession with intent and the officer planted sheetrock/gypsum dust. Charges were dismissed but it still shows up on his record that he was arrested and charged. He cant get a decent job.

If they were dismissed they need to get the charges expunged. I use to hire contract labor all the time and would give guys the chance to work but if they had a record I was much more hesitant to ever hire them on full time.

There are freshly degree'd young people that can't find work. I would think a forger/thief/convict would have a helluva time.

I did just hear that the unemployment rate here in Texas fell from 6.8 to 6.6 yesterday, and is showing nice growth. Gotta love this state.

If he discloses it, I would never see a resume. If he does not, he would not be hireable after the background check, unless he is very luck and the city/county/state dropped the ball on documentation.

LOL. Of course he isn't going to get hired in retail with a theft record. Any retail employer is already worried about theft(and employees are the highest cause of retail theft, not shoplifters). I'm not going to hire someone who has already displayed such a propensity toward theft they have been convicted of it. Many places won't even allow it. There are plenty of convictions I'll overlook, but that isn't one of them.
