Rip and may God be with the train crew and family members. Any time you hit someone that stays with you for a long time. You'll never forget their face if you make the mistake of not looking away right before impact.

Fully agree, those guys will have to live with this and there was nothing they could have done to prevent it.

It's terrible to make it through what they did only to be done in like this. I hate hearing it, and it happens to far too many servicemembers.

Why am I not surprised that your first thought is in defense of the railroad?

If those deputies did in fact hold up the crossing gate arms....they are so FUCKED I don't even know where to begin. When I worked at DART and in Austin on the Austin Western both railroads had to issue instructions to the police agencies that responded to crossing malfunctions that they were NOT to lift the arms for traffic unless authorized by train control or a signal maintainer. Several DART police officers were reprimanded when I was there.

If you saw the amount of idiots I come across trying to beat the train or go around the gates in one day it would blow your mind. Not to mention them putting my life in danger each time they do it.

I wholeheartedly believe you. But damn man, let your guard down before you become the 03blu of choo choos. You already get enough shit for various other train related things.

Some class 1 locomotives have an automatic bell and horn when it comes within a certain distance from the crossing they automatically activate. Our Safety director the fucking safety director told us not to hit the brakes until you hear metal crunch. How fucked up is that?

Hmm....your safety director didn't come from the Austin rail project did he? Disregard for the safety of employees and the general public is the reason I quit that piece of shit railroad...and it seemed like the Federal Railroad Administration turned a blind eye EVERYTIME me and my fellow coworkers would express concerns or report incidents.

watching this on the local news right now, truely a sad situation. The corvette club was sitting right behind the trailer in their cars when it was hit. I drive through that crossing almost every day. RIP

Going to be a very sad day around town. Latest story I've heard was the gates started coming down while the trailer was on the tracks and the driver was honking trying to get the other truck full of vets to move faster so he could get it off the tracks.

Looks like it got the back of the trailer.

It just seems so careless to me. How does a train come out of nowhere?

They were saying on the news that vehicles sometimes get high centered on the tracks because the tracks are up on a "hill".
