TCU tuition going up to $36,500 next year

FORT WORTH -- Effective next fall, tuition for undergraduates at TCU will be $36,500 per year, an increase of 5.8 percent.

The increase, approved recently by the board of trustees, continues a trend for the private university. Tuition has increased from $22,980 in 2006 to $34,500 this school year. When room, board, books and supplies are added, the estimated cost for the fall and spring semesters is $46,350.

"Our students desire a high quality educational experience that includes a personalized setting with a low student to faculty ratio, facilities equipped with cutting edge technology and an exceptional on-campus living environment," Chancellor Victor J. Boschini Jr. said in a news release.

"The results of this kind of experience are evident in the number of students who find jobs, go on to graduate school and, ultimately, become leaders in the global community. At the same time, we must continue investing in financial aid to help those who need financial support to obtain a TCU degree."

The amount of scholarships and financial aid available for incoming students will increase by 7.5 percent, or about $7 million, according to TCU.

Some students turned to Twitter to discuss the tuition increase.

"When are people [the TCU student body] going to realize that there will be a tuition increase every year? Stop complaining, it's inevitable," wrote one student who describes herself as TCU Class of 2015.

Kathleen D'Urso, a sophomore, told the Star-Telegram that many students are "naturally unhappy" about the hike. But she understands that increases are a reality.

"Most private universities increase their tuition each year," D'Urso said. "I am also confident that I am getting my money's worth and that the tuition increase will go toward making my degree worth even more in the future."
The increase will help pay for 16 new staff positions, including academic advisers for the College of Nursing & Health Sciences and the College of Education.

It will also help pay for improvements including the development of an Intellectual Commons area on the east part of campus.
That project will include transforming the Mary Couts Burnett Library and adding a new instructional building east of the library.

I'm glad I made it out of there when I did. Even with a partial scholarship and CPA dad I don't know if I could pay that kind of coin for an undergrad degree.

    College = overrated. Drive trains.

    Chooooo$$$$$ chooooooo$$$$$$$

In all seriousness, it's gotten beyond ridiculous. I think the bubble will burst soon enough.

Corby was talking about this on the Ticket yesterday. He said it was absurd when he went there, but I don't remember what year he graduated. A complete waste of money, were his words. He did say the connections you make are almost invaluable, but that $200,000+ for an undergrad is outright theft.

Obviously, an education can be had for a lot less, but I can't even imagine what it would be like to start off in a hole like that.

It wouldn't be hard at all to make some base case assumptions and DCF this out to approximate the value. Maybe I'll do that later once I get Cisco off my ass.

Any degree is worth something some more than others.

Like a degree in art is absolutely worthless.

              Did you just post:

              1) Any degree is worth something.

              2) An art degree is worthless.

I have a DFWM contrarian economic indicator metric. Frequency of "college is worthless posts" is a component along with pit bull news stories. Spurious correlations be damned, its predictive power is astounding.

                    That is beyond insane.

I couldn't imagine having $100k+ in debt for a undergrad degree in this current economy unless I was becoming a MD. I have zero, my wife is now under $30k, and neither of us use our degrees anyway. I'm almost positive I would go to college today between the prices and the knowledge I have at 30.

It really is an insane amount. Even for an MD, it doesn't seem worth it to me. I talk to docs all day who are looking for work, and a lot of them are buried in student loans for a long time, and spend their first 10 years or more out of residency broke as fuck. Heck, a lot of primary care docs aren't even making $125k/year. Ouch!

Connections are the unquantifiable and frequently overlooked best side effect of college. A degree certainly doesn't hurt, but who you know has and always will be one of the best ways to land a decent job.

JFC at 36k a year for TCU. Good University and all, but it ain't Harvard. Have they even broken in to the top 100 yet? Last time I looked they were ranked around 115 or so for academics.
