  • Home Alarm: Wired or Wireless?

I'm kinda skeptical about going wireless, but it seems all the big companies are offering it... Anyone have one? Thoughts?

Considering going with Safemart for the provider, Simon XT for the system...

I have Hawk Wireless at my shop and home. So far I'm happy with it. Install is simple with no wires to run. Easy to move the sensors if necessary and if the phone line gets cut which is common with a break-in I still have an alarm system.

If you are seriously thinking about one I'd suggest just doing some research on these guys - http://www.vivint.com/

I know several people that have their systems and all have been really happy. I had them come out and do an eval on my place, and I'll say that I'll probably switch to them once my current contract runs out.

The worst part about a wireless system is if/when a sensor falls off. They typically like to fall at night too, when you're asleep and the system is on.

I just recently had a 2Gig system put in by Smith Monitoring. I would not recommend their monitoring since I have had a lot of trouble with them not wanting to let me modify and add to the system but insisting that I PAY them to do it. And then there are a lot of things they wont do. But I am very happy with 2Gig system. It is totally wireless and you can buy all the parts online and put it in yourself and then contract monitoring at the lowest cost you can find. But don't let anyone tell you that motion sensors will ignore animals.... My 10lb cats set the thing off every time. Had to block it out.

we use Vivant at our house. we've had it almost a year. we've only had one problem with one of the keypad entry on the door went out. they came out with in a few days and fixed it. other than that it has been and worked wonderfully.

True, I went to cell phones only around 2002 and had to go back to a landline several years later for DSL.

Get a couple of large vicious Pit Bulls or German Shepherds....and a Remington 870 pump. Problem solved.

Att is in the process of selling off the copper system all together in rural areas. If a company doesnt buy it they are going to provide LTE service so that all homes can get data/voice services. Just a rumor.

Ok, I went with Safemart. Couldn't beat the price / contract terms. We'll see how it goes.

                            Viviant was too damn expensive!

                              Hey all,
This is Forward Home Security (previously Smith Monitoring)! Just wanted to say hi to you all and let you know that we're available for any questions you might have about home security or home automation.
And danielhv, Safemart is a good choice. They definitely have some good things going, and we hope you're happy with them! And you might not be our customer, but we'd be happy to help if you'd like an outside perspective on anything.
Thanks, and have a great night!
