  • Motorcycle Oil

As much as I would like to troll this site all day, I, unfortunately, have other things I need to get done. Such as change my oil in my car and bike. Car is not a problem but I was wondering if anyone with experience changing oil in a motorcycle has some free time today and would like to break it down for me (not literally)?

Yes, I know this isn't the correct forum but I need a larger audience temporarily.

you dont need a stand. I always used to ratchet staps to lift the bike upright.

Then drain oil, change filter, put plug in, and fill with oil

Ride the bike and get it completely up to temp so the oil gets good and thin, it will drain faster.

Remove the lower fairings, I find it's much easier to remove both, but you may only need to do one.

Remove the oil fill plug, the oil will drain faster and the filter will be easier to remove.

Drain the oil just like you would with a car. With the bike on a kickstand you may have to hold it upright to drain all the oil out. Sometimes sitting on the bike to compress the rear suspension more oil will come out too. Drain as much as you can.

On the filter, it may be over the exhaust header and you do not want oil all over it. Use a piece of cardboard or foil as a "ramp" for the oil to flow down and into your drain pan.

Install new filter, add oil that's it.

Pretty much the same for older models too. Sorry for the lack of pics detailing the fairing removal process, but that really is the most tedious part of the oil change. Assuming you got the left side fairings off (mid and lower).. 1) Gather all the supplies you need 2) Warm up the motor for a...

Thanks guys this helps a bunch. I am sure I could have figured it out but its always easier being pointed in the right direction than guessing what needs to be done.

Edit: Where can I get bike oil filters from? Does Walmart/Pep Boys/Auto Zone carry them?

Some yes, more than likely they will.

I doubt Walmart carries them, but O'Reilly, Napa, Vatozone, etc, should have what you need.

I would lookup what you need online first, and tell them. I don't trust them to give the right filter for bikes. Or better yet, take your old filter up there with you.

A must when you're not familiar with a certain vehicle.

I always just got the yamaha stuff it was cheap at the time.

I would say to use a good filter. Again i always used the factory filter.

It was a benefit of having friends who worked there.

I cant wait to have a bike again
