I had to lol a little. Really, when you look at our society and his generation, it makes sense. Sport's "participation" trophies (and equal playing time) "no child left behind", "affirmative action". They're told that they are all equal and are entitled to about everything. There's no incentive to do better or even face a challenge, because they've never had to. My two daughters are the same age (one younger, one older) and I fought tooth and nail for them to take nothing for granted. Hell, he's got the means to go so I can't begrudge him that.
On the other hand, it's not for me.

What a quagmire of shit in here. I don't even know where to start. I don't see any problem with it and wish you well, Alex. I completely understand your frustration, and I have felt we've been beyond the tipping point for several years. This is something I've dedicated a lot of thought to over many years. A lot of you guys are calling back to earlier times. The fact of the matter is that just because something worked 200 years ago doesn't mean it will work in 2012.

I am disgusted with this country. Half of my family came here from Britain in the early 1600s, and played major roles in the Salem Witch Trials and the Revolutionary War. The other side immigrated from Norway in the late 1800s/early 1900s. My dad is only second generation American. I look at my family history and desperately want to steer this country into the right direction and salvage it, but I honestly feel it is too far gone. I don't know what to do about that, and as a person of action, it is very frustrating. No Empire will rule forever. It's a mathematical impossibility.

If you think this is a generational thing you're beyond wrong. I cannot stand that stupid attitude of the older we are the better we were. All generations have their shit. And if any younger generation is worse off than the next it's the older generations fault.

            • You guys really think someone uprooting their entire life, leaving all their friends and family, and moving to a different country and culture is the "easy way out?" Might I ask what you would consider the hard way out to be?

Not for all, but for some, it's undeniable. It has nothing to do with "the older we were, the better we were", but more "the older we were, the less we felt we were entitled and given". Given the list I put in my post, how is that not a factor? My generation will take the blame, since that seems to be an issue with the newer generations (along with our POTUS...to pass the blame). Of course it does depend on how you were raised, too.

                        • Both Republicans and Democrats confuse me. Most of that pictar about Australia makes it sound appealing to me. The only thing I find slightly questionable other than the Health Care is the no Death Penalty.

We've wanted to go to Australia and New Zealand for years, but could never take off the month or so we would need to really cover it all. I understand it's VERY appealing with all the gorgeous coasts' and terrain. I also heard there's a lot more of it that's desolate wasteland.

There is no fixing it. No changing it for the better. It is fucked. It is only going to get worse, exponentially. The failures/takers now outnumber the successful/givers. The US is going the way of Rome, and soon will have the same fate. And there isn't a single fucking thing that ANYONE can do about it.

Our forefathers left Europe to get away from oppressive governments, they didn't stay there and try to fix it like everyone is blabbering about, they were smart enough to know to get the fuck out and go somewhere else and start over. The fucked up thing is now there is NOWHERE to go to start over, all you can do is hope to find a place less fucked up than the one you are leaving.

I have never had anything good to say about the OP, but I see the wisdom in his decision. Everyone that mentions his age, you don't have to be older to see history and to see how it has changed.
I bid him good luck, I'd do the same if I had no children and the funds to do it.
