Radar Detectors...

I don't own either, but there are only 2 that I'd consider.

First is the Valentine and that's the one I'd buy.

Second is the Passport.

Both out of my price range so I just don't speed that much.

Now if you encounter a guy who is just sitting under a shade tree with the always on radar, you can get some decent warning since he's just broadcasting a large signal for you to intercept.

I think some people don't realize they'd still need to use common sense when using a radar detector...

I can't begin to tell you guys how many people I pop with instant on radar.

All you have to do is sit and wait until you see someone you can tell is hauling a$$ and pull the trigger. By the time the detector goes off, it's too late.


Now if you encounter a guy who is just sitting under a shade tree with the always on radar, you can get some decent warning since he's just broadcasting a large signal for you to intercept.

i am mostly running rural interstate when i am speeding to try to make up some time. i am not so much in urban areas, and when i am, i am more driving the common speed as opposed to hauling ass...

in your LEO experience, are troopers that are running gun on interstates leaving the radar on, or are they doing the type of gunning that you mentioned here ?

and i don't mean that i am balls to the wall and counting on the detector to keep me out of trouble. i just mean that i find myself in the left lane for long stretches of road in the middle of nowhere and it actually saves me money to get where i am going in a timely manner. i would just like some heads up when a louisiana or arkansas trooper is under a tree in the median...

That's hard to say since I don't have much interaction with troopers. I believe that their policy is to visually estimate, and then confirm with radar the speed of the violator's vehicle. That doesn't mean they get lazy and just leave it on from time to time.

The last time I saw a DPS car, the radar has a remote, so it's easier to operate as intended.

x2 so true. those detectors are about worthless. I have had more than one and they will give some warning on the interstate and in small towns.. They will pick up a laser gun about .5sec before they get your speed and the LEO almost always use instant on. Just do the fucking speed limit, its not that hard

Im glad only State Troopers run radar up here. All the smaller depts and sheriffs use the old school count the distance between points routine.

some states have outlawed detectors. The cops have detector- detectors to know if you have one. But the some of the higher end detectors will turn themselves off to keep from getting detected

Yeah I cant use my Detector if I go down into Virginia. I dunno about DC, I heard you cant there either, but I had it on the last time I drove there. DC has speed cameras. They have them all up and down the road at 30mph places. You see them flashing like the paparazzi at night its crazy. They are mounted on wires above the road. Never drive in DC unless you have to.

I run a passport 9500ix and love it. It has a gps feature that keeps false alarms to a minimum. The key to using a detector properly is to drive like you don't have it. Don't speed when you are the only car on the road. Wait for several cars that are speeding and pace behind them at a few mph slower. POP and lidar can get you easily, but the key is to not be the fastest car on the road and use common sense.
I usually only go 10 to 15 over on the highway so most of the time people are zooming past me. Just understand a detector or other devices don't give you a free pass to haul ass everywhere.

dps trooper got me with instant on- V1 went off and i just pulled over and he just turned around and got berhind me. 78 in a 70 was my ticket.

I've got the Passport SR7 and the ZR3 laser shifter. I've been real happy with it, but I don't drive very fast.
