I don't mind people living whatever way they want to live so long as they extend me the same courtsey. Doesn't sound like he is in a give and take situation with them.

I don’t understand why people think they should be miserable to make some relatives happy. If they really cared about him and loved him, they would welcome anything that would make him happier than being there, where he doesn’t fit in and isn't happy. Seems like they are being selfish to me.

My mom didn’t come to any of our planned Christmas day activities, including my daughter's first Christmas morning because she wanted us to do it at her house, and we didn’t want to. My wife's mom and some family friends came over and we had a good time without her.

I'm not saying it should be a one way street, not at all. There should be compromise from both sides, that's how life works. In my experiences, people that don't ever want to compromise are normally selfish or self centered. It sucks, I understand, I've dealt with a lot of those situations, but it's an unfortunate part of life. The way I look at it, if I have to go be uncomfortable for a couple of hours I'll gladly do so if it means I can see and spend time with my family, especially my nieces and nephews. Kids shouldn't have to sacrifice time shared just because the adults don't see eye to eye. Know what I mean?

                    This.

And I hate how fake everyone is around my Grandma, the family matriarch. All of my scumbag money-grubbing relatives just go over to her house to kiss her ass so that they can somehow get at her money. I don't want her fucking money and I am not going to be fake and change my lifestyle for a chance to get at it.
I would love to spend some time with my family and have a real conversation, but I can't. When we get over there it is prayer and worship time first, then I get asked if I have "been drinking any of that beer, the devil's drink" and how that is a terrible lifestyle choice that will send me to the gutter (my grandma also told me how disappointed she was in my for going to Baylor because it was a baptist university when there was a perfectly good adventist school in keene). I also was told how disappointed my grandma was at our entire family for dancing at my cousin's wedding (dancing is evil). Then I get chastised for not coming down and visiting more. Did I mention my grandma remarried at 89 and now makes me call this dude grandpa as if I have know him my whole life? Right before the "meal" we have a reading from the bible and more prayer bullshit, then they praise my fake ass loser cousins for having gone to the Adventist ceremony with them and chastise us for not doing it.

So yeah I think I will go skiing with my girlfriend, have some per-marital sex, drink some beer/whiskey/demon drink, smoke a few cigarettes, and watch TV on Saturday instead.

I enjoy the holidays and this time of year. I host both Thanksgiving and Christmas and do 95% of the cooking. I enjoy the smells, weather, food, sounds, etc. I have an open door policy and I donate quite a bit....I even enjoy the sounds of the bell ringers outside of the stores that most people despise.

The part that ruins it for me are people moping and wanting to stay home and lay in bed or be alone instead of fighting through their demons and making it a happy time for their kid. They're only a true "kid" once. The problem I ran into last year is I wanted to buy for my father and his wife since they do for my kids. Instead, I was told to buy for the wife's teenage daughter who came from nothing until my father was in the picture and she had a detailed list of expensive crap and wanted a gift receipt with it "just in case." I made it clear I am not doing that again. I enjoy giving, but when you act like that it's a chore and no longer fun.

I'm laughing at the tofu turkey, by the way. I had to kick someone out of my house at Thanksgiving a few years ago for shoving their beliefs down my 2 year old's (at the time) throat. I don't think we needed the graphic details of how the turkey got on the table.

More than you know. If it werent for the selfish people who wont compromise, Id bet I would have a much better outlook coming into November. Ill go out of my way to make everyone feel comfortable, or I can be the biggest asshole prick motherfucker ever. It greatly depends on other's attitudes from the start.

If this, the "holiday season" gets you down why do you continue to capitulate in the same rituals? Doing the same things repeatedly and expecting different results has a name, and that name is INSANITY.

Make some changes. There is no set plan. We go bowling as a family as I pretty much have had my fill of my family and the wife's well let's just leave it at they are her family. I dont want to see either side and if they wanted to see me a call to setup a get together is all it would take.

And for those crying about the sun setting, what do you live in the stone ages? Get an extension cord and a drop light or some of those $10 halogen pieces from Lowe's. Late night thrash to get to work the next day? What you never had to before? You aren't running it hard enough.

That said, happy thanksgiving and merry Christmas and well wishes to you fringe types who don't celebrate the first two.
