I'm just asking for facts. When I make a claim, I can back it up, and provide statutory proof.
If you can't do that, just say so. People don't have to get all fired up.Originally posted by BroncojohnnyHOORAY ME and FUCK YOU!

this thing with paladin cant seriously be getting you this mad is it?
I'm just in one of those agitating moods.
I just make a few statements and the Tripster gets all bent out of shape.
I have to maintain the cop asshole rep, and every once in a while it needs a boost.
Anyone ever notice how I can interject a few spicy posts and a thread takes off?Last edited by 03trubluGT; 01-01-2011, 06:39 PM.

I love how you try to put it on that you did this on purpose.

I can't show you that non-existent law that protects IP addresses because, you guessed it, it doesn't exist.

You could click on a username and see it for yourself.
Since you can't do that, I have to believe that IP information is protected to some extent and not public knowledge.
The site will have to protect itself from liabilty if I'm right.
The only information that we (Admins/Owners) can see that you can't see in their public profile. Is there true DOB, if they selected it to be invisible. Their registration IP and email. And you can type in their user name under in section where you can search for IPs. And it will show you every user name that has used that particular IP address. You can also see how many PMs that are in their inbox and various PM statistics. (Can't read, just view your PM stats and usage). And a few other small things. I also run a hack that allows me to track all activity for each specific user. You just click on their name and it shows every thread they read at what time. This can help weed out the trolls and spammers before they start to go to work on flooding your site. Admins/Mods can see your IP just by putting their mouse cursor over a certain indicator spot in each thread and will show the IP for that user. You don't actually have to access the CP to see this data.
There are no laws that protect you in this type of forum environment. Why? Because your name and address are public knowledge. Your IP address on any publicly accessible and open subscriber (http) internet message board falls within that same nomenclature. Anything that can be obtained through the Open Records Act can be posted. However, this is not a good practice for any Site Owner or staff member to do so. It really comes down to a matter of tact. Just because you don't like another guy for whatever reason. It's still not cool at all to reveal info that could potentially allow unscrupulous people to make them vulnerable in any way. People have families and children. You have to think twice before you take actions running a big message forum.
For people who are concerned about the privacy of your WAN (Publicly visible) IP address there are numerous proxy sites you can use to prevent the site owner's from seeing your actual home or work IP. However, most employers will not allow proxies.

See, I guess I am totally naive and unfamiliar with this kind of stuff. I would have no idea what to do with an IP address, nor would I think anyone else could. It is amazing how you guys can figure all that stuff out.Token Split Tail

It's entirely up to the discretion of the owner and those he elects to become a staff member. Is it something I would do? No. I would just verbally confirm that the suspect IP addresses for the alias do match instead of posting publicly. This just to prevent lurkers/wannabee hackers taking a chance at port scanning his home IP or utilizing other back door practices on his home network. And you are also revealing what area they live in with a customer premise IP like the one posted above. You could GEO IP that address (location of the Switch/POP, which is probably within 20 mile radius of the GEO IP location marker). That's not always cool. However, it is not illegal in any way under normal circumstances. Most Admins/Site owners will not do this on principle. However, there are certain circumstances where you could not post or discuss any info regarding a user profile. And that is if you have been contacted by a State or Federal Law Enforcement regarding a particular user or topic due to a plethora of reasons.

Lol. No one cares Don. It's a select group on the other site that engages in that activity so it's all good man!Originally posted by DuckI am assuming you are saying no one on this site cares, because I visited the new site and apparently quite a few care. I am also pretty amused by the poor guy who is getting blamed for being me. I have not registered over there under any name and only visited it a few times in the last week after I was told (not by Matt btw) that I was a hot topic over there.Originally posted by Fox466That sounds kind of funny. Some guy is actually catching hell because they think that he's you? Lol. Not surprised!
I quit voluntarily and have no desire to go back at this point, and I'm really not sure I ever will. Trying to figure out how to make this site take off...Originally posted by DuckYep, just did a quick search on that site and they are claiming a moderator from DFWstangs has verified that my IP address is the same as some guy who posts there. Either someone is lying or the change from DFWstangs to DFWMustangs has caused a huge drop in e-sleuthing! Either way it freaking hilarious to me.
I guess the city IP address could be the same if he works for FW, but there is no way he could be posting from my house and those are the two IP addresses I post from 99% of the time.
