Just goes to show how fucking bad ass the USMC is

WASHINGTON—Hurricane Sandy is expected to slam the East Coast and the federal government is shut down—but the U.S. servicemen who guard the outdoor Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery will remain on duty.
"They will not abandon their post," an employee who answered the Arlington Cemetery's phone confirmed to Yahoo News. He identified himself as "George," but was not authorized to speak on the record to the media.
The tomb, located just outside Washington, D.C., holds the remains of unidentified soldiers from World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
The elite sentinels selected to guard it have kept watch continuously at the site since 1948.
First hand witness at the failure of public healthcare.

I was going to point that out. Marines don't guard the tomb. Army does. And they don't play about it either. They pull people going into basic training who are good candidates and groom them from there. It's a maximum honor to do the job and one very, very few get to do.

                Lists every guard since 1941

Tomb Guards are part of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment "The Old Guard". The Old Guard is the oldest active infantry unit in the military, in service to the U.S. since 1784. After a valorous performance in the Mexican War, the Old Guard received its unique name from General Winfield Scott during a victory parade in Mexico City in 1847. The Old Guard has a long history of service to the U.S., from the Revolutionary War to the Iraq War.

Were you there for a wreath placing or something? Guards have always been Army..

They do wear the Dress Blue uniform, which is not what most people associate with Army Soldiers.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is guarded by the Third United States Infantry Regiment, the "Old Guard." The regiment has diverse ceremonial as well as real-world missions. Soldiers of the regiment include the U.S. Army Drill Team, the Caisson Platoon, the Continental Color Guard, the Presidential Salute Battery, and, of course, the Tomb of the Unknowns.
"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." - Thomas Jefferson, 1776
