Leet-speaking is actually very shitty protection; most, if not all, dictionary attack algorithms do this.

I find a 6-7 character alpha-numeric combinations that kind of rhymes or have a certain groove. I be sure to use it in an email account or work computer until it's committed to finger memory.

I have five or six strings like that, and I do combos of them for a damn-near unbreakable password.

Basing the complexity at alpha-numeric only - a longer password would be more secure to cracking.

Utilizing special characters increases the password possibilities, thus increasing the time to crack.

i use mkpasswd -s 0 -l 24 and then store the data in keepassx. What pisses me off is when I use sites that tell me shit like

"dtR0nvwI2waojudltgqauien is not a secure password, please use special characters"

We change ours at work (IT consulting company) once a year at a minimum, some people go above and beyond, but we have the rules set to minimum of 8 characters and it has to include two special characters, an upper case letter, a lower case letter, and a number.
