The trick is to always count down...notice there is no 987654321...

Actually, I think the safest ive seen was with secure ID tokens and a strong password.

I have five or six strings like that, and I do combos of them for a damn-near unbreakable password.
Dictionary attacks are not an algorithm. They are an attack that utilizes a "dictionary" file - the data within is what the cracking program utilizes as it tries to crack the account. (lookup Rainbow tables to blow your mind)

Basing the complexity at alpha-numeric only - a longer password would be more secure to cracking.

Utilizing special characters increases the password possibilities, thus increasing the time to crack.

Same goes for brute force, which I don't even know if people do much anymore.

i use mkpasswd -s 0 -l 24 and then store the data in keepassx. What pisses me off is when I use sites that tell me shit like

"dtR0nvwI2waojudltgqauien is not a secure password, please use special characters"

              Fuck you.

It helps when you use 741, or 8520, or 963.

LOL! My Blockbuster Video Point of Sale password was 7410, could just swipe your index finger down the left side of the numpad. Didn't help because you needed the employee's account number to log in, and we kept those pretty closely guarded.

                            Mine's @randomword0-9 or 741, 8520, 963. I have to change them like every 30 or 40 days.

We change ours at work (IT consulting company) once a year at a minimum, some people go above and beyond, but we have the rules set to minimum of 8 characters and it has to include two special characters, an upper case letter, a lower case letter, and a number.
